On June 13, the Husky 4-H’ers had our last meeting at Cicero Christian Church. It has been a joyful year, and from here on out we will be preparing for the 4-H Fair.
This month, Stella Hartwick and Grace Miller, our club’s Secretary and Treasurer, ran the whole meeting. After the officers did their duties, Colton Hoane and Cooper Kilfoil did a reading from Second Corinthians on how faith will always guide us to God for the last devotion of the year.
One of our Safety Officers, Matthew Duprey, did a presentation on what to do if an animal gets heat stress. Signs of heat stress include an open mouth, lying down, and panting. You should cool down an animal that has heat stress with water and shade and provide both of those during the dry season.
Our club then voted on whether to donate $600 to the 4-H Fair’s Food and Animal Auction, and the vote passed.
This month’s trivia question was: Which animal is Scotland’s national animal? The answer was a unicorn, and the winner was Colton Hoane. Then one of our Song Leaders, Zuri Ebigbo, led everyone in song for anyone who had a summer birthday.
After that, we had several demonstrations. Matthew Duprey did a demonstration (and I helped) on carding llama wool so it can be used to make stuff, which can be done if you do the Llama Project for 4-H. Then Drake and David Biddle did a demonstration on Diamond Arts, in which you make pictures using tiny diamond beads. This project can be done as an Arts and Crafts project for 4-H. Our last demonstration was by Chiamaka Ebigbo on what is needed if you do bucket calves or dairy cows in 4-H, such as lead ropes and curry brushes, which keep the cow’s fur clean from grime.
We then gave two $500 scholarships to two graduating members who have been faithful and good leaders through all 10 of their years in 4-H: Isaac Leonard and Tessa Hartwick. Isaac is currently studying construction at Ivy Tech, and Tessa is going to learn about sonography, the process of using ultrasounds to get pictures of babies still inside their moms.
We all ended the meeting with a game of Sharks and Minnows, and then we learned how to make our famous grilled cheese sandwiches for the Producers’ Tent. First, you take a slice of bread and paint it in liquid butter on the outside of the bread and put two slices of cheese on the inside. The same process is repeated for the other slice, and then it is put on the griddle. Once it is cooked to a gooey yet buttery perfection, it is wrapped. The sandwiches are then sold to lucky customers who get to taste the heavenly, buttery bread with the bursting flavors of cheese. Remember, all the profits from our grilled cheese sales go to support our club so that we can pay for stuff such as scholarships.
Now that we are reaching the Final Countdown to the 4-H Fair, I just want to say that I am proud to have served as one of our club’s reporters this year. Good luck to everyone at the Fair this year!
