Eleanor Moffitt

February 14, 1928 – August 18, 2026

Eleanor Moffitt, 98, Carmel, passed away on August 18, 2026. She was born February 14, 1928, in the small town of Washington Court House, Ohio, to Daniel and Nelle Arnold Stuckey.

After graduating from Carmel High School in 1946, Eleanor moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she was promoted to secretary to an Air Force colonel at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. In 1954, she married R. Lyman Moffitt and returned to Carmel.

Following Lyman’s passing, Eleanor worked for two years as one of the first Guide/Interpreters at Conner Prairie Museum, where she served in the Conner House and the Trading Post. Once her children were in school, she began a 21-year career with Carmel Clay Schools. She worked as a secretary at Woodbrook Elementary and Carmel Junior High before retiring from the activities office at Carmel High School.

Eleanor was an active member of Carmel Friends Church. She was involved in Women Aglow, the Order of St. Luke, the United Society of Friends Women (USFW), Progressive Arts Club, the Carmel Clay Historical Society, and the Carmel High School Alumni Association.

Eleanor took art lessons from Melinda Spear-Huff in Sheridan where she learned the love of painting. She also took porcelain painting lessons and created delicate pieces of art.

Eleanor’s family shaped Carmel’s landscape. Her father sold his farm on the west side of Carmel, and a portion of it became Crooked Stick Golf Course. Later, Eleanor sold her family home on the east side of Carmel, and the first roundabout in Carmel was built at River Road and Main Street. In 1950, Eleanor’s father, Dan Stuckey, ran for political office as a trustee and was instrumental in moving the Clay Township boundary to the White River in Carmel.

She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

She is survived by her three children, Scott (Kristen), Cynthia (Richard), and Jacquelyn (Christopher); grandchildren, Ryan (Ashley), Matthew (Allie), Stephen (Jessica), Christian Scott, Kathryn, and Sarah; great-grandchildren, John Ryan, Robert, Murphy Jo, and Merritt Lyman; step-grandchild, Jamie; and great-grandchild, Nuala.

She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Nelle Stuckey; her stepmother, Martha Stuckey; and brother, Eugene Stuckey.

Family and friends will gather for visitation at 10 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2026, at Carmel Friends Church, 651 W. Main St., where Eleanor was a longtime member. The Funeral Service will begin at noon at the church.

Eleanor’s final resting place, alongside her husband, Lyman, will take place in Carmel Cemetery with a private family committal.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Senior Home Companions, A Home for Mom/Gloria Metzler, and Legacy Hospice.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Carmel Clay Historical Society or Purposeful Design (Christian Ministry).

Bussell Family Funerals is privileged to assist the family in arrangements.
