Wrestling roundup: Southeastern wins third consecutive Loggan Memorial Tournament, Millers runner up at Fendley Hall of Fame

The Hamilton Southeastern boys wrestling team won its third consecutive Paul Loggan Memorial Tournament at North Central last Saturday.

The Royals went 5-0 in team duals. Southeastern beat East Central 49-15, Rushville 72-0 and North Central 51-18 in its first three rounds, then edged out Westfield 34-28, with Evan Lawhead clinching the victory for the Royals. Southeastern then beat Lebanon 52-9 to complete the undefeated day.

Five different Royals were undefeated for the event: Tyler Jackson at 113, Nick Anderson at 126, Zach Lang at 157, Lawhead at 215 and Nate Ingalls at 285.

The Shamrocks went 4-1 for the tournament. Westfield beat North Central 57-15, East Central 43-27, Rushville 76-3 and Lebanon 55-13. Porter Temples was 5-0 at 120, Chase Camire went 4-0 at 132 and Eli Turner was 3-0 at 157.

Noblesville finished as runner-up to host Zionsville at the Mike Fendley Hall of Fame Classic last Saturday.

The Millers got past Fishers 43-27 in their first meet in pool play, then blasted through Lawrence North 60-19 and Richmond 84-0 in their next two matches. That put Noblesville in the championship match against the Eagles, and Zionsville scored a very close 37-35 victory.

Four Millers were unbeaten with 4-0 records for the event. Caleb Leeman was perfect at 150 pounds, while Austin Hastings went undefeated at 285 pounds. Josh Kauzlick won three matches at 126 before winning his Zionsville match at 132, and Carter Richardson took the Fishers match at 157, then won three more at 165.

As for the Tigers, they placed fifth in the tournament. After its loss to Noblesville, Fishers beat Richmond 81-0. The Tigers then wrestled to a 36-36 tie over Lawrence North, but lost a tiebreaker based on match wins (the Wildcats had eight victories to Fishers’ six.) Fishers beat Western Boone 58-21 in the fifth-place bout.

Seth Lamb went 4-0 at 106 pounds, while Xavier Smith was 3-0 at 165. Chayce Yant also went unbeaten, winning three matches at 120 and another at 126.

Sheridan competed in the Tipton Invitational last Saturday, going 2-3.

The Blackhawks won duals over Northwestern 66-3 and Pendleton Heights 40-24, while losing to Indianapolis Lutheran 42-36, Crawfordsville 75-6 and Tipton 51-25. Alex Cravens went undefeated at 150 pounds for Sheridan with a 5-0 record, winning four matches by pin.

Hamilton Heights finished ninth in the IHSWCA 2024 Team State Duals, which took place last Saturday at Jay County.

The Huskies were edged out by New Prairie 39-34 in their first-round match. After receiving a bye in the consolation bracket, Heights took care of Wawasee 50-28 to move to the ninth-place match, where the Huskies beat Maconaquah 40-36.

Six Heights wrestlers went undefeated for the tournament. Kendall Moe won all three of her matches at 106, as did Isaac Kuhn at 132. Jaylyn Pugh had one win at 138 and two at 144, while Alex Furst had two 138-pound victories and another at 144. Michael Cain picked up two wins at 165 and one more at 157, while Carson Fettig had two 157-pounds wins and one at 150.

Fishers was a 46-21 winner over Pendleton Heights in a Tuesday dual meet.

The Tigers got victories by fall from Seth Lamb (at 106), Will Hruskoci (at 113), Owen Ingalls (at 120) and Camden Funk (at 157). Chayce Yant was the 126-pound winner by a 15-0 technical fall.

Zeke Kramer won the 145-pound bout with an 11-2 major decision, and Diego Carabona was a 14-3 major-decision winner at 175. Fishers had three decision victories: Teyon Leonard won 3-2 at 138 pounds, Julian Burgett was a 5-2 winner at 190 and Walid Oumammar won 6-1 at 285 pounds.

In another Tuesday dual, Sheridan’s boys fell to Lebanon 69-11.

Alex Cravens won at 150 pounds with a 15-0 technical fall, while Owen Trietsch was the 285-pound winner by fall.

Sheridan’s girls won 24-18. AJ Hamersley (at 125), Devyn Pewarski (at 130) and Avery Hayden (at 145) all won by fall, with Claudia Headlee (at 190) winning by forfeit.
