“… never forget that writing is as close as we get to keeping a hold on the thousand and one things – childhood, certainties, cities, doubts, dreams, instants, phrases, parents, loves – that go on slipping, like sand, through our fingers.” – Salman Rushdie

I have been writing for this publication for several years now, and I never tire of the challenge and the satisfaction I receive from sharing my experience, knowledge, and genuine love of the subject matter of health and wellness with my readers. I especially appreciate the feedback and conversations I have with many of my readers when I am “out and about” in our lovely city. More about that later in this column.

As I reflect on my writing journey through the years, it represents a lifetime of voracious reading and the natural outcome of that: writing. I wrote stories and essays about my stuffed animals and pets when I was a child and other topics for many years after and I do not intend to stop writing as long as I can do so with joy – and I hope that is a while yet!

I truly believe that if you are a reader, you are also a writer, though you may not realize it. Note the quote I have used above. Writing is a powerful tool that emerges from our cognition in the form of memories, ideas, doubts and dreams, loves and losses. We live in a world of increasing challenges which can cause confusion and despair. Writing can help us discern our own philosophies and assist us in helping to improve lives of those around us through education, imagination, humor, and inspiration. If finding a professional publisher to take on your project feels too daunting, consider self-publishing which is an option that can provide a finished project for you.

Journaling can be a way to kick start your writing. I know some feel that it is necessary to write every single day otherwise it is not effective. I disagree. Write when you are inspired to write. Remember “pen pals”? Well, if you do you are definitely in my demographic! Sit down and write a letter (not a text or short email) to a friend about your life and how they have touched your life perhaps. Write an essay about your experiences in raising children, your career choices, your love life – anything that has happened to you in a significant way. We are all writers – we just need to write! There are workshops and classes to help you corral your thoughts if needed. Check your local library for those, and yes, look to the internet as well for guidelines and suggestions. Future generations of your family will appreciate you writing about your life events and how you may have dealt with your own challenges. Writing is powerful.

Most people who write professionally (vocation) get their start after pursuing their education and beginning a career with a publication or educational institution. Many authors found their writing careers later in life and began writing fiction or non-fiction professionally, while others pursue writing endeavors which include grant writing and professional journals. My primary professional career involved management as CEO of two different organizations and hosting a cable TV show while other ventures include teaching fitness classes and nutrition consulting and now includes the publication of one book and deep into the writing of another.

And, of course, writing for the Hamilton County Reporter remains one of my favorite writing journeys of this vocation/avocation.

So – I look to you, dear readers, for your assistance in some of my upcoming column topics. I have quite a few on my list but my primary focus is YOU and what I can share with you. It is very gratifying when I hear from you that I may have helped you in some small way reach your fitness goals. Last year I was approached by a woman who told me that some of my suggestions she incorporated into her nutrition and fitness program helped her to lose 20 pounds. She had tears in her eyes as she told me she had tried several “diets” over the years but appreciated my common sense suggestions. Then I had tears in my eyes as well!

If you have a suggestion for a health and fitness related topic or any feedback you would like to provide to assist me in my future topic selections please feel free to email those to sharonkeelmcmahon@gmail.com.
