CARMEL – The University girls got a nice win on Wednesday, and they did it the right way.

The Trailblazers beat Mooresville Christian Academy 53-30 at the U Center. University never trailed, scoring the first nine points of the game, and the ‘Blazers outscored the Eagles in every quarter.

Mooresville Christian is a relatively new program, although it did play tough and had some nice moments against University. Trailblazers coach Lisa Pryor was happy with the respect that her team showed against the Eagles.

“They did exactly what we asked them to do,” said Pryor. “That game could’ve gone different if we wanted it to, but we really wanted to respect our opponent, and then also, we really wanted to work on some things we needed to work on.”

Ten different players took to the floor for University, and everyone contributed something. Keira Bright opened the game with a 3-pointer and went on to score seven points in the first period, which ended with the ‘Blazers up 16-5. Leah Norvell also hit a 3 in the opening period.

University led 23-11 at halftime. The third quarter belonged to Anyah Jordan-Turley, who took over with eight points in that period, and another six in the fourth. Jordan-Turley led the scoring with 20 points, and Pryor said she was also impressed with her three assists.

“If she’s able to do those other things, that’s going to bring her shot up even more, because people are not only going to play her to score and drive, but they’re going to have to play her for everything else,” said Pryor, saying that will “free her up even more.”

Norvell finished the game with 11 points. Mack Feeney collected six rebounds and made five steals, while Bright had six assists and six steals.

Charlotte Conyers scored six points in the fourth quarter, while Jayda Dawn got her teammates pumped up by scoring a third-quarter basket.

“I tell the girls, no matter what five we have on the floor, the expectations are the same,” said Pryor. “There’s no letdowns, right? Although they don’t have as much experience, I don’t want to give them any lower expectations, that bar is always high, and so they’re always improving. I think that’s why they’re improving as quickly as they are.”

University is 5-3 and plays at Bishop Chatard tonight.
