Editor’s note: The Sheridan Student Column is brought to readers by Sheridan High School’s Accelerated English 9 class, taught by Ellie Arrowood.

Mr. Alcock is a walking inspiration to many students at the Middle and High School. He has been teaching at Sheridan High School for two years. He graduated from Zionsville High School and later earned his degree in Secondary Education in Social Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Teaching wasn’t always his intended plan, but several family members who teach at school inspired him. It was working as a camp counselor at summer camps that made him realize how much he loves working with kids and helping them grow every day.

He teaches Principles of Human Services and Fundamentals of Human Services, along with Exploring Business and 7th grade Social Studies. He also helps coach 8th, 7th, and 6th grade basketball.

As a resident of Sheridan, you should appreciate Mr. Alcock for his persistence when times get tough. He doesn’t give up on his class when they are being disrespectful, he treats everyone with the kindness and respect that they treat him, and he is really nice and kind to everyone, no matter what.

I appreciate him because he is detailed with his lectures and assignments, he keeps class entertaining, and he walks around the class to ensure we students understand the material. He also makes the students feel welcome and ensures everyone feels like they have a place to fit in.

A quote that represents him is “Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.” (Roy T. Bennett)

I chose this quote because he believes that there is goodness in everyone’s hearts and makes people feel happy. Mr. Alcock genuinely cares and appreciates his students, and we are very fortunate to have such an awesome person like him.
