Dear Editor:
Carmel voters are an odd bunch.
Only one in five registered voters bothers to vote.
Editor’s note: For context, readers should know that 19.5 percent of voters voted in the 2019 Carmel municipal elections, according to the Hamilton County Election Office. This means Shaffer’s “one in five” estimate is spot on.
In a few days, the first significant mayoral election in 28 years will occur. The former mayor retires, and a new mayor will inherit his $1.5 billion debt. How the new mayor and council members address the borrow-and-spend formulas of the past will determine the city’s future for a generation to come.
I endorse the freedom to vote.
I endorse the accountability we all share for how the government is doing.
I endorse the responsibility we all share to voice our views on Nov. 7.
And I hope you do, too.

Bill I think more folks would vote if they did not get dragged into jury duty as that is a source list. Just a thought
Don’t let that stop you from voting. Jury duty can be a good experience.
