The Hamilton County Board of Commissioners has officially acquired the Sheridan Airport, located on Jerkwater Road in Adams Township just three miles north of Sheridan. The transfer of ownership became effective Monday, July 14.
Originally opened in 1948, the public-use airport features a 3,760-foot paved runway and a hangar capable of housing multiple aircraft. It becomes the second airport under county ownership, joining the Indianapolis Executive Airport on State Road 32 in rural Boone County north of Zionsville.
The acquisition is part of the county’s ongoing efforts to meet the increasing aviation needs of both the public and private sectors. Hamilton County currently sees more than 41,000 aircraft movements annually, a number expected to grow with the county’s continued population and economic expansion. With close proximity to the U.S. 31 corridor, the Sheridan Airport will help increase aircraft storage and ease congestion at other nearby facilities.

“This is a strategic investment in our county’s future,” County Councilor Brad Beaver said. “Indianapolis Executive Airport continues to see an increase in business jet traffic. By contrast, Sheridan Airport will serve piston-engine aircraft. It gives us the flexibility and space we need to support growth across all sectors – commercial, private, and recreational.”

why does the county need an additional airport?
I love the rural view of the airport and surrounding farm fields and farm homesteads. Let’s keep it that way – no new commercial buildings or progressive growth around this airport.
For those who live nearby ; you’ll be able to enjoy the accompanying increase in noise as the County ; ” supports growth across all sectors “.
We have relation that lives nearby the Executive airport in Fishers & when visiting on any given day, the noise level of aircraft coming & going is a constant companion. A tenfold increase in the noise level in that area over the last 10 years or thereabouts.
One wonders at what point does Hamilton County & municipalities within take a hard look at their 50 year ongoing philosophy that ; ‘all growth is good growth’ & rethink it.
Being able to get one’s car washed, have a pizza delivered or get chicken nuggets on nearly every street corner doesn’t necessarily translate into a higher standard of living.
