Twenty-four caddies from across the state of Indiana have been awarded the Evans Scholarship – a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies – following selection meeting interviews held at Briar Ridge Country Club in Schererville and Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis on Jan. 28 and 29.
Among the awardees are these three Hamilton County students:
- Grant Woodward of Carmel; Carmel High School student; caddies at Woodland Country Club
- Tobe Schwind of Noblesville; homeschooled; caddies at Meridian Hills Country Club
- Breah Ellis of Westfield; Westfield High School student; caddies at Meridian Hills Country Club
The students will begin college this fall as Evans Scholars, with most expected to attend Indiana University in Bloomington or Purdue University in West Lafayette. Final university placements will be determined this spring. The Evans Scholarship is valued at more than $125,000 over four years. A full list of recipients is included below.
To qualify for the Evans Scholarship, each student must meet the Program’s four selection criteria and show a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character.
The Western Golf Association (WGA), headquartered in Glenview, Ill., has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. Known as one of golf’s favorite charities, it is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.
“Indiana has a long and proud tradition of producing outstanding Evans Scholars,” said Brian Specht, a WGA Director and the state chair of Indiana. “This group of young caddies has earned this opportunity through years of hard work, character and commitment, and we look forward to seeing the impact they will make on campus and beyond.”
