United Way donating 500 books for elementary school children

United Way of Central Indiana will donate about 500 books to first through third graders next week as part of Read Across America Day.

United Way will drop off books on Wednesday, March 2 at Hamilton North Public Library branches, Hamilton East Public Library branches, the Sheridan Public Library, and the Westfield Washington Public Library.

Children will get to keep the books to add to their at-home libraries. Books will be available in English and Spanish.

Early childhood education is a major focus of United Way of Central Indiana. For 14 years, United Way has operated the ReadUP program, which sends volunteers into schools across the region to read with third graders who are falling behind on their literacy skills. Third grade is a considered a significant milestone that marks a shift from learning to read to reading to learn.

For Read Across America Day, United Way also is asking employees at its corporate partners – businesses that run United Way fundraising campaigns in the workplace – to donate a copy of their favorite childhood book. At least eight businesses plan to participate.
