CARMEL – The Carmel swim team hosted Hamilton Southeastern Monday evening in dual meet.

The Greyhounds swept both the girls and boys competitions, with the girls winning 146-40 and the boys triumphing 135-50. Carmel’s girls swept every single event, while the Greyhounds boys were winners in 10 of 12 events.

“It was a good racing opportunity,” said Carmel coach Chris Plumb. He said the team came into this week with “a lot of energy,” and it was the Greyhounds’ Senior Night as well.

Carmel’s girls, winners of 37 consecutive state championships, had solid performances from its veteran swimmers. Junior Lynsey Bowen was first in the individual medley, and junior Alex Shackell won the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Molly Sweeney won the breaststroke, one of the events she won state in as a freshman last year. Carmel also swept all three relays.

Other victorious Greyhounds girls were sophomore Kayla Hann in the 100 free, junior Addy Czarnecki in the 500 free and Kayla Barr in the 100 backstroke and senior Melaina Munson in diving. Meanwhile, two freshmen also won events: Sophia Floyd in the 200 free and Faith Gorey in the butterfly.

“They’re doing great,” said Plumb. “I definitely know they’re going to make an impact in the lineup come sectional time.”

Several of those swimmers were days removed from outstanding performances at the 2023 Speedo East Winter Junior Championships, which took place at Ohio State last week. (More about that meet will appear in a later edition of the Reporter.)

In the boys meet, senior Brandon Malicki won the 50 free, while his classmate Gregg Enoch was first in the butterfly. Both were part of state champion relays for Carmel at last year’s state meet. Other boys winners for Carmel were sophomore Brian Qian (individual medley), sophomore Carter Hadley (100 free), freshman Eddy Zhu (500 free), junior Anderson Kopp (backstroke) and freshman Trent Allen (breaststroke). The ‘Hounds claimed all three relays as well.

Southeastern had two victories, first from junior Jihoon Jung in the 200 free. Another Royals junior, Gavin Tucker, won diving.

“I was happy with the way that they competed,” said HSE coach Christian Hanselmann. “One of the things that we’re focusing on is learning how to race and practicing those, and taking what we do in practice and putting it into place in competition. I think they did a good job tonight doing that.”
