The Westfield Washington Schools (WWS) Board of School Trustees and the Westfield City Council convened a joint working session on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Westfield High School auditorium.

The public meeting reflected a shared commitment to collaboration and strategic planning as Westfield continues to grow. The session focused on aligning long-term residential growth, infrastructure planning, and school facility needs to best serve students, families, and residents.

The goal of the joint session was to strengthen coordination between the city and WWS around thoughtful, sustainable growth. Discussions emphasized the importance of proactive planning to support a growing community while maintaining a high quality of life and strong educational outcomes.

During the session, school officials clarified that WWS is operating under a well-researched, data-driven strategy to responsibly expand facilities over the next 10 to 15 years. This approach prioritizes student experience, educator support, and family needs while responding to continuing steady enrollment growth.

“The solution to this problem isn’t about slapping up homes or enabling unchecked sprawl,” Mayor Scott Willis said. “It’s about growth that creates a healthy, sustainable, and prosperous community. My commitment to our residents is to balance the resident feedback I’ve heard about density with the undeniable necessity of supporting our school district.”

Superintendent Dr. John Atha emphasized the value of bringing the two governing bodies together in a transparent, collaborative setting.

“The initial idea behind the joint meeting was to bring our two governing bodies together to explore opportunities for collaboration that would better serve our community,” Dr. Atha said. “We created some momentum this evening, and we look forward to more collaborative opportunities to make Westfield a great place for students to learn and grow and for families to live.”

The meeting included a presentation of demographic and enrollment projections prepared by McKibben Demographics, along with a review of the city’s comprehensive plan related to residential development and infrastructure investment. Participants discussed how projected population growth and school enrollment trends intersect and how coordinated planning can support responsible, long-term decision-making. McKibben Demographics has partnered with the school system for more than a decade and actively works with hundreds of districts each year.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer period involving representatives from Westfield Washington Schools, the City of Westfield, and McKibben Demographics, reinforcing the shared commitment to transparency, public engagement, and collaboration.

Both the city and WWS expressed their intent to continue working together to ensure future growth aligns with the needs of students, families, and the broader Westfield community, citing that joint work sessions and meetings will remain a priority.
