Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance was recently recognized as a finalist for the 2025 Digital Transformation of the Year award presented by TechPoint during the 26th annual Mira Awards. These awards elevate innovative, Indiana-based companies that are leaders in the tech ecosystem.

The company received recognition for its innovative approach to enabling secure access to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for internal productivity. That approach started with a multi-day innovation event with over 10 employee-created teams who explored the potential GenAI has for the company.

The event highlighted the value of everyday access to GenAI models and was the reason for creating an enterprise application called AI Lab to harness the power of large language models. The resulting AI Lab was built in-house and includes access to nine powerful large language models, all hosted securely with privacy and security in mind.

“Creating AI Lab allowed for flexibility and a vendor-agnostic approach to our everyday GenAI strategy,” said Andrew Marsh, the company’s director of information security. “We worked closely with our trusted cloud partners during the design and model selection process to ensure that data submitted through this application is protected.”

Another element of the success of the rollout was the steadfast focus on the end user. Through a culture of innovation, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance has encouraged all areas of the company to identify responsible ways to leverage GenAI in their daily work. The company believes this approach will drive growth, foster creativity and boost productivity.

The in-house application allowed Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to maintain control over data security while also achieving significant cost savings. The application uses a consumption cost model, which has resulted in 90 percent cost savings compared to traditional GenAI subscription models.

“Being a finalist for the Digital Transformation of the Year award is a testament to the impact AI Lab has had on the company,” said Jo Lee Hayes, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s chief information officer. “I’m proud of the efforts of our employees who developed and deployed our application, and those who have embraced this new technology. Our approach strikes the perfect balance between innovative technology, cost efficiency and empowering our employees to shape the future of our industry.”
