Four county golfers in top 10 after Indiana Amateur first round

Four Hamilton County golfers are presently in the top 10 after the first round of the Indiana Amateur Championship, which began Monday at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis.

Carmel’s Clay Stirsman is tied for third after carding a seven-under par 65. Stirsman drained eight birdies in his opening-round effort.

Another Carmel man, Nicholas Dentino, is part of a three-way tie for fifth place after his round of five-under par 67. Dentino totaled six birdies; he made birdie on three of his first four holes, then finished his round with three consecutive birdies.

Fishers’ Cole Starnes also scored five-under par 67 to put him in the tie for fifth. Starnes made six birdies for his round, also draining three in a row to finish his round.

Westfield’s Jake Cesare finished with four-under par 68, putting him in a three-way tie for eighth place. Cesare also made six birdies during his opening round.

Two men share the lead after scoring eight-under par 64: Tipton’s Maverick Conaway and LaGrange’s Ben Keil. A total of 33 players finished their first round under par.

The 54-hole, three-round tournament continues today with the second round. Golfers will tee off between 8 a.m. and 2:48 p.m. Once the second round is finished, the field will be cut to the top 60 and ties, with those golfers advancing to Wednesday’s third round.
