The City of Fishers’ pre-Independence Day celebrations culminated on Saturday, June 27 with the Spark!Fishers parade at 7 p.m. and the fireworks show at 10 p.m. Among those walking in the parade was U.S. Senator Todd Young, who was invited to participate by the Hamilton County GOP Central Committee.

The Reporter spoke with Young before his parade participation about his history with Fishers, his patriotic spirit, and why he finds Independence Day to be important every year, but especially as America turns 250 years old.

“I grew up in Hamilton County, you may recall that, and it’s a natural fit for me,” Young told The Reporter. “In the past, I’ve had my nephew, my niece, my siblings, and other family members marching in the parade, and I see my neighbors – many of whom I haven’t seen since high school years – along the way. It’s really great.”

Young told The Reporter he is proud of all that Hamilton County has become, and Fisher’s in particular.

“I grew up next door, but what Mayor Fadness has been able to accomplish, leading the city and demonstrating what strong Republican leadership can accomplish, it’s gratifying,” Young said. “I’ve seen the City of Fisher’s boom and attract investment from large companies like JD North America. They recently announced they’re moving their headquarters to Fisher’s. It’ll be great to go there and mix with the people of Hamilton County and show the flag. I want to proudly wave the Republican banner.”

Senator Young will have a busy July 4 weekend, which he told The Reporter made the date of the Fishers event much easier to work with.

“I think it’s great, especially this year, when so many of us are inclined to celebrate the 250th throughout the year,” Young said. “This gives us more opportunities to wave the flag, reflect on why we love it and are grateful to live in this amazing country, and more locally, to reflect on community and our neighbors and our values and what really makes this country strong. And then, of course, more triumphally, I enjoy the big fireworks show.”

As Young has been traveling across the state this year, he told The Reporter he has been at a variety of events that are politically diverse, and as we get closer to the 250th celebration of America’s independence, he’s noticed a growing patriotic spirit.

“I’m starting to see a lot more red, white, and blue clothing, and just people coming up with celebratory plans for this anniversary,” Young said.

Young asked that we remind our readers that while this holiday is about celebrating America as a whole, it is our veteran community that gives the most to protect our continued freedom.

“As I’ve been traveling around, I’ve been making it a point to highlight a veteran in the area and to share a story of their courage and their sacrifice,” Young said. “I know we’ll see a lot of proud veterans at the parade this weekend. I always do. And they’re so proud of their service. I think it’s important that we continue to elevate them and remember why we’ve made it 250 years and why we’re going to make it another 250. Everyone has a role to play, but these veterans are especially important. So, you may see some pictures with me shaking a veteran’s hand or hugging a veteran, and that’s why it’s important for me to do so.”
