Carmel’s Jerald Hayes was a member of one of the American teams that won four of the 10 titles at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) 65-, 70-, 75-, 80-, 85-and-over World Team Championships, in Capdepera, Mallorca, Spain.

The tournament is the super-senior tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, where top American tennis players represent their country in the 65-, 70-, 75-, 80-, 85-and-over age groups.

Hayes was the captain of the United States team that won the Lorne Main Cup, the Men’s 85 and over division. Hayes was joined by Albert Lyle of Jackson, Miss., Lester Sack of Laguna Hayes, Calif. and Wilbur Jones of Shawnee, Kan.

All teams representing the United States left the tournament as champions or runners-up.  This year’s teams also took home titles in the Gardner Mulloy Cup (men’s 80 & over), Althea Gibson Cup (women’s 70 & over), and Angela Mortimer Cup (women’s 85 & over).

Following the ITF World Team Championships, the individual championships are taking place now through Oct. 21.
