The Westfield softball team’s historic post-season run came to an end Monday in the Class 4A north semi-state.
The Shamrocks fell to Fort Wayne Carroll in a semifinal game 8-5 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. The contest was to have taken place Saturday, June 6 at Harrison before thunderstorms forced a date and venue change.
The Chargers got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. Westfield scored its first run in the third inning when Cam Pulice singled in Makayla Watson. The Rocks tied the game in the fifth inning when Reese Mahannah scored on a wild pitch.
A two-run double put Carroll ahead 4-2 in the top of the sixth before Westfield turned a double play to end the inning. The Chargers then erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to lead 8-2.
The Shamrocks made one last push in the bottom of the seventh. Adelyn Kurth led off with a double, then Westfield loaded the bases after absorbing a double play. Pulice blasted a double to score Sofia Easterhaus and Mahannah, then Carlynne Schrock singled Pulice home before Carroll got the third out to end the game.
Pulice was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Watson and Schrock both had two hits. Mac Delph pitched 6.1 innings, striking out seven.
Westfield finished its season 17-11-1, winning a first-ever regional title to go with the program’s second sectional crown.
