The golf outing celebrates the legacy of Abigail Cox, a 2021 Hamilton Southeastern graduate who passed away in 2023 after injuries from a car accident. Cox was a student at Purdue University and serving as a counselor/high elements facilitator at Kanakuk Christian Camp in Arkansas.
The proceeds of the outing provide a $20,000 scholarship to Purdue University. Abigail’s father Joe Cox said last year’s inaugural golf outing was a success, thanks to support from friends and community.
“It was a great event,” said Joe Cox. Joe and his wife Kathy Cox are expecting another successful year, as he said “we have a few more teams that are entered this year that are Abigail’s peer group, kids she went to high school with. My son (Elliott) is bringing a team from his fraternity.”
Joe Cox said he is happy to see the youth involvement in the golf outing.
“That’s where we get to hear a few Abigail stories,” he said. Having Abigail’s fellow students allow Joe and Kathy Cox to “see the people that she shaped and shaped her through those high school and college years.”
“We just like being surrounded by the people that she was close to,” said Joe Cox.
Kathy Cox said the outing allows them to share Abigail’s story, one that tells of a life that revolved around service, faith and joy.
“A word that would be used to describe her was spirited,” said Kathy Cox. “She found her energy from people. She loved to be around people, she loved to lead, she loved to sing and dance and just have fun. This is definitely geared towards her personality.”
In addition to the Purdue scholarship, last year’s golf outing raised additional money that went into the Abigail Cox Legacy Fund, which benefits the Hamilton County Community Foundation. The money helped support Blue Crew, a spirit club at Hamilton Southeastern.
“We partnered with them and bought a t-shirt cannon to use at all the sporting events,” said Kathy Cox. “We did two scholarships at the end of the year for Blue Crew.”
Other funds went to Zeta Tau Alpha, Abigail’s sorority at Purdue, and to a Bible study retreat called “Come As You Are.” Joe Cox said funds went to “a couple of young people that were counselors at Christian camps,” helping one person attain a certification and another to receive CPR training.
Kathy Cox said that faith was a big part of Abigail’s life, saying that “as she grew older it became even more important. She started going to Christian camps in first or second grade. She stayed involved in them throughout her youth.” Abigail then took on leadership roles as she grew older, serving as a Wyldlife leader and Holy Spirit at Geist Teen Life leader. She also served as a Young Life leader and was part of Greek IV at Purdue University.
The outing is one of two events that honor Abigail Cox and her legacy. The third annual Abs Angels Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 28. The walk begins at Hamilton Southeastern and goes to Heartland Church, a couple miles east of the school on 126th Street.
The golf outing is still accepting hole sponsorships until noon Wednesday. Visit www.abs-angels.com to find the sponsorship form and email it to abs.angels2023@gmail.com.
