Millers win at North Montgomery Holiday Duals, HSE’s Lang reaches 100th career victory

The Noblesville boys wrestling team won the individual portion of the North Montgomery Holiday Duals, which took place last Saturday.

The Millers scored 178.5 team points and had nine place winners, including four runners-up: Josh Kauzlick at 126 pounds, Luke Chastain at 138, Gage Gulley at 175 and Austin Hastings at 285. Cody Prater (106), Caleb Leeman (150) and Carter Richardson (165) all finished in third place. Cale Metzler took fourth at 215 and Evan Nicholls was fifth at 144.

Hamilton Heights was third in the individual tournament with 151.5 points. The Huskies had two champions among their eight place winners. Isaac Kuhn was the winner at 132 pounds, while Carson Fettig took first at 157.

Heights had three runners-up: Cooper Doucette at 113, Simon Kuhn at 150 and Michael Cain at 165. Rounding out the place winners were Jaylyn Pugh (fourth at 144), Alex Furst (fifth at 138) and Joey Sigler (sixth at 190).

Noblesville finished as team runner-up last Friday in that portion of the North Montgomery Holiday Duals.

The Millers reached the finals by going unbeaten in their pool, defeating Centerville 70-12, North Montgomery 67-10 and Alexandria 56-22. Noblesville beat Rensselaer Central 39-32 in a tough semifinal, then lost in the championship match to New Haven 39-30.

The Millers had six unbeaten wrestlers for the tournament: Kauzlick at 126 pounds, Chastain at 138, Aidan Kincaide at 157, Richardson at 165/175, Gulley at 175/190 and Hastings at 285.

Hamilton Heights placed fifth at the North Montgomery Duals. The Huskies were 2-1 in pool action, beating Greencastle 51-27 and Hanover Central 47-30 before falling to Harrison 45-34. Heights beat North Central 48-29 in the consolation semifinal, then got past Pendleton Heights 38-31 in the fifth-place match.

Four Huskies finished the day unbeaten: Doucette at 113/120, Isaac Kuhn at 132, Simon Kuhn at 150 and Fettig at 157.

Fishers placed fourth out of 31 teams at the Connersville Spartan Classic, which took place last Thursday and Friday.

The Tigers scored 193.5 team points. Other teams in the top four were champion Greenfield-Central (266), runner-up New Palestine (222) and third-place East Noble (221).

Fishers had one individual champion: Xavier Smith at 165 pounds. Smith won his first two matches by fall, then beat Bishop Chatard’s Kade Rickard by a 9-4 decision in the quarterfinals. Smith accelerated to the finish line, beating Greenfield’s Mason Thompson in the semifinals with a 14-5 major decision, then cruised to victory in the championship bout with an 18-2 technical fall over East Noble’s Dallas Plattner.

Other Tigers place winners were Chayce Yant (third at 126), Diego Carabano (fourth at 175), Owen Ingalls (fifth at 120), Teyon Leonard (fifth at 138), Will Hruskoci (sixth at 113), Stephen Breck (sixth at 150), Seth Lamb (eighth at 106) and Julian Burgett (eighth at 190).

Sheridan placed fourth out of 10 teams at the Eastern Classic, which took place last Friday and Saturday.

The Blackhawks wrestled in nine dual meets and finished with a 5-4 record. Sheridan beat Clinton Prairie 54-24, Fremont 45-18, Madison-Grant 42-21, Carroll 60-18 and Eastbrook 39-19. The Blackhawks lost to Northfield 59-24, Tri-Central 51-24, Eastern 39-30 and Tipton 60-24.

Ryker Ream was the Blackhawks’ top finisher with an 8-1 record at 165 pounds. Eli Bales (at 157) and Zach Bales (at 175) both compiled 7-2 records while Alex Cravens was 6-3 at 150 pounds.

Three Hamilton County teams participated in the 52nd Boys Mooresville Holiday Classic last Friday and Saturday.

Hamilton Southeastern had the highest finish of county teams, placing sixth. The Royals had an individual champion in 157-pounder Zach Lang, who claimed his 100th career victory during the tournament. Lang went 5-0 to finish first, beating Carmel’s Jairo Ojeda-Cortes in the final with a 7-1 decision.

Three other Southeastern wrestlers placed third in their classes: Nick Anderson at 126, Chris Casler at 144 and Evan Lawhead at 215. Matt Billet was fifth at 138.

Carmel placed ninth as a team. Ojeda-Cortes had the best result of the Greyhounds’ seven place winners by finishing as the 157-pound runner-up. Also placing in the top eight were Caleb Mattingly (fifth at 132), Jackson Schmidt (sixth at 150), Adel Navarrete (sixth at 190), Carlo Federici (seventh at 106), Tamir Halevi (eighth at 113) and Alex Ryan (eighth at 175).

Guerin Catholic’s Peter Nguyen was the runner-up at 126 pounds.

Westfield had two place winners at the Al Smith Classic, which took place last Friday and Saturday at Mishawaka.

Jake Saez finished seventh at 138 pounds, while Porter Temples was eighth at 120 pounds.
