Baseball: Royals fall to Arabians, beat Greyhounds

Hamilton Southeastern dropped a close game to Pendleton Heights on Saturday, April 11, then rebounded with a win against Carmel on Monday.

The Royals lost 2-1 on the Arabians’ field. Clark Bucher scored on an error in the first inning for Southeastern’s lone run.

Cy Cole hit a double for one of the Royals’ hits. Chase Bradle pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing five hits.

Southeastern traveled to Carmel’s Hartman Field on Monday and won 14-7. The game was back and forth early: the Royals got on the board in the first inning when Jackson Bixler scored on Parker O’Steen’s RBI groundout.

The Greyhounds surged ahead 3-1 in the second inning. Jackson Treadway led off with a home run, then Nate Steele hit a double. Steele scored after Max Walkery reached on error, then Jacob Behm got home after Kane Hare reached on error.

Thomas Richason doubled Steele home in the third inning to put Carmel up 4-1. But the Royals took over in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs.

Conrad Owens singled in Cole, then Nick Bach batted in Alex Shepherd. Bixler hit the go-ahead single, with a right field blast to bring in Owens and Bradle. The score was 5-4, but HSE wasn’t done yet.

Bach scored on an error, then Bucher sent Will Johnson home with a double. Bucher scored on a balk, then Bradle singled in O’Steen. Cole got home on Owens’ RBI fielder’s choice to give the Royals a 10-4 lead.

Bixler scored in the fifth inning on Cole’s RBI groundout, pushing HSE ahead 11-4. Behm hit a solo homer for the Greyhounds in the bottom of the fifth. Carmel added two runs in the sixth inning, with Jackson Harris batting in John Zangrilli and Hare scoring on Treadway’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Royals finished the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Bixler led off with a home run, then Cole doubled in Bucher and O’Steen.

Bixler and Cole both had three hits for Southeastern. A.J. Eikenberry pitched 5.1 innings for the win, striking out three. Steele, Behm and Richason all had two hits for Carmel.

Carmel dropped both games of a doubleheader at Penn on Saturday, April 11.

Carmel lost the first game 2-1. The Greyhounds scored their run in the first inning when Zangrilli stole home plate. The Kingsmen scored both of their runs in the sixth inning.

Penn won the second game 11-7, starting with four runs in the first inning. Carmel got on the board in the second inning: Harris hit a double and eventually got home on Richason’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Hounds put up five runs in the third inning. Mark Neels singled Zangrilli home, then Walkey scored on Richason’s sacrifice fly. Carmel loaded the bases and Hare emptied them, cracking a triple into right field to score Neels, Treadway and Behm. The Greyhounds led 6-4.

Penn scored three runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-6 lead. Behm tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single; Treadway scored. But the Kingsmen scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and added three more runs in the sixth.

Neels also hit a double in the sixth inning.

Carmel fell to North Central 6-5 on Friday, April 10.

The Hounds scored three runs in the third inning; Treadway tripled in Harris and Behm, then Richason singled Treadway home.

Carmel led 3-2 going into the seventh inning and scored two runs in the top of that inning. Steele singled in Zangrilli, then Neels scored on a passed ball. But the Panthers scored four runs in the seventh to win.

Neels finished with two hits.

Both teams are back in action Thursday. Southeastern is 7-2 and hosts Zionsville in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game. The Hounds are 2-4 and host Lawrence North.
