Girls wrestling: Royals win first regional tourney

The Hamilton Southeastern girls wrestling team won its first regional championship last Saturday at Crawfordsville.

The Royals scored 125 team points, comfortably ahead of runner-up North Montgomery’s 108 points. Southeastern had 11 wrestlers place in the top four, which qualifies them for Friday’s semi-state at Muncie Central.

Four HSE wrestlers won their weight classes. EJ Shults was the champion at 110 pounds; she was followed by Kiarra Churchill who won the 115-pound championship match with a second-period pin. Ava Shaw won at 155 pounds, also claiming the title with a second-period fall. Fanta Sall won the 235-pound class.

The Royals had four runners-up at the regional: Lilliana Rodriguez (at 105), Omana Jacob at 140, Jayda Harris at 145 and Kelli Crawford at 170. Marinelli Rodriguez took third at 120 pounds. Maria Mira took fourth at 125 pounds and Sam Broyles was fourth at 130.

Sheridan had six place winners, including four who finished the top four and advance to semi-state. The Blackhawks scored 56 points and finished fifth as a team.

Claudia Headlee won the 190-pound championship, pinning her finals opponent in the first period. Adrianna Hamersly was third at 125, while Devyn Pewarski took third at 130. Avery Hayden finished fourth at 145 to earn a spot at Muncie Central. The ‘Hawks had two fifth-place finishers: Jessa Dunbar at 125 and Eva Todd at 140.

Carmel took seventh as a team with 32 points. The Greyhounds advanced two to semi-state: Grace Sharp was third at 115 and Josie Belloti took fourth at 170. Alisha Calcuttawala placed fifth at 145.

Noblesville finished as the team runner-up at the Pendleton Heights regional last Saturday.

The Millers scored 101 points, second only to the host Arabians’ 139 points. Noblesville advanced eight wrestlers to the Muncie Central semi-state, led by two champions.

Kyra Tomlinson won the 130-pound division, taking the championship match with a first-period fall. Evangeline Howard was the 140-pound winner, getting a second-period pin in her final match.

Ruth Tobar placed second at 235 pounds. The Millers had three third-place finishers: Jordan Stevens at 120, Sophia Teitsman at 125 and Brooke Butler at 135. Tahira Gibson (at 125) and Eden Short (at 130) both placed fourth.

Hamilton Heights scored 65 points to tie for fifth as a team. The Huskies also had two champions and advanced five wrestlers to semi-state.

Kendall Moe was the winner at 100 pounds and Karma Collier was first at 190 pounds. Both wrestlers won their divisions with a first-period fall in the championship.

Aubrey Baber placed second at 115 pounds. Amelia Cordero-Ballenger was third at 170 and Morgan Moe finished fourth at 140.
