The Noblesville softball team held off Fishers 9-7 to win a Hoosier Crossroads Conference and all-county game Friday, May 15 at the Tigers’ field.
The Millers began with three runs in the first inning. Haley Schatko doubled in Reese Newsom, then Maggie Kern blasted a home run, also sending Schatko home.
Fishers got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Cate Summerfield led off with a triple, then scored after Kennedy Shockley hit a sacrifice fly.
Noblesville added a fourth-inning run when Newsom batted in Kinley Westbrook.
The Tigers tied the game by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Adrianne Cook singled in Bella Balbo with the bases loaded. Frankie Jackson drew a walk to score Summerfield, then Shockley went home on Anna McGrath’s sacrifice fly.
The Millers put up four runs in the sixth inning for an 8-4 lead. Zapp singled in Allie Thompson, Newsom scored Zapp with a two-run homer, and Kern doubled in Kate Ringholz.
Zapp batted in Grace Cummings in the seventh inning, putting Noblesville ahead 9-4. Fishers kept swinging in the bottom of the seventh, as Cook hit a solo homer, then McGrath knocked in a two-run home run, also scoring Jackson. But Addison Retzinger threw a strikeout to clinch the win.
Newsom was 4-for-5 at the plate, while Zapp had three hits, including a double. Retzinger totaled nine strikeouts in a complete game.
Summerfield, Cook and McGrath all had two hits for the Tigers.
Saturday doubleheader
Noblesville traveled to Jay County for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 16 and won both games.
Noblesville beat Jay County 6-5 in its first game. The Millers led the Patriots 6-1 after four innings and held off a comeback after Jay County scored four runs in the fifth inning.
Zapp was 3-for-4, including a home run and a double. Newsom hit two doubles in a 3-for-4 performance, while Kern also joined the 3-for-4 club, hitting one double. Schatko hit a double as well.
Roslyn Ervin got the pitching win, striking out eight in five innings. Retzinger threw the other two innings, tossing five strikeouts.
The Millers won the second game 9-1. Newsom, Schatko and Kern all had three hits during the second game. All three hit one double, as did Retzinger. Kern batted in three runs, and Ketzinger threw seven strikeouts in a complete game.
Both teams play HCC games tonight: Noblesville hosts Zionsville and Fishers hosts Brownsburg. The Millers are tied for first in the conference with Franklin Central, both schools are 4-1. The Tigers are 1-4 in the league. Overall, Noblesville is 16-6 and Fishers is 14-8.
