Callie J. Smith, an Indiana voice in contemporary fiction, announces the upcoming release of her latest novel, Kohelette, a gripping exploration of loss, grief, and personal transformation. Published by Clay Patin Press, the book is forthcoming April 1.
“I think sometimes the shame associated with grief keeps people from talking about the very real human experiences of struggling with loss, resisting change, and not having the energy to move forward,” Smith said. “Stories of imperfect people fumbling through these experiences can help us connect with our own griefs at a different level and find words for things we may not have verbalized yet.”
Kohelette delves into the life of Kohelette (“Lettie”), a middle-aged, single mother who needs new ways to support her family after losing her job. Emotional and financial pressures mount, and Lettie considers selling the family house, but the ghosts of relatives intervene, reminding her about the family dream of opening a yarn shop in the front room. She’s realizing she might want to make that dream her own. But will Lettie find a way to keep the house before losing more than she even knew she had? Domestic fiction meets magical realism in this story of piecing together a life after loss.
