Girls basketball: Golden Eagles score first-ever win over Huskies

Guerin Catholic's Katie Koger looks over the Hamilton Heights defense during the Golden Eagles-Huskies game Tuesday at the Eagles Nest. Guerin Catholic won 34-30, its first-ever win over Heights.

There was some history at the Eagles Nest on Tuesday, as the Guerin Catholic girls basketball team took on Hamilton Heights in an all-county game.
The Golden Eagles rolled to a big halftime lead, then weathered a comeback from the Huskies before prevailing 34-30. It was the first time Guerin Catholic had beaten Heights in girls basketball – the teams had been playing since 2007, and the Golden Eagles were 0-9 until tonight.
“We want to play together, and we want to be the hardest workers in the gym,” said Guerin Catholic coach Marc Quaranta. “This is my third year here, and that’s the first thing I wanted them to learn three years ago is, outwork everybody. We also have a very talented group.”
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter, then increased their lead to 19-4 by halftime. Six different GC players scored; Kathryn Loso led the way with five points.
The Huskies came roaring back in the third quarter, outscoring Guerin Catholic 20-8. Camryn Runner scored nine points during that period, with MyKayla Moran adding seven points. The Golden Eagles thus led 27-24, but they were able to hang on in the fourth quarter. Loso helped out with seven points in the fourth; she would lead all scorers with 15 points. Megan Cobb was next with six points; both she and Hannah Weitzel made one 3-pointer.
Quaranta said his team wants to model after Hamilton Heights.
“They work harder than most teams I’ll see all season and they got talent,” said Quaranta. The coach said that if his team could follow the Huskies’ model “and just outwork everybody, now we’re a little bit older, a little bit better, that we can compete with some of the best teams and I consider Hamilton Heights one of the best teams.”
Runner scored 13 points for the Huskies, including a 3-pointer, while Moran finished with 11 points.
The Golden Eagles are 2-1 and play their first road game Thursday at Cardinal Ritter. The Huskies are 2-2 and host Lebanon Friday.
