Girls basketball roundup – Fishers win streak now nine

Fishers ran its win streak to nine games after two victories last week.

The Tigers sailed past Pike 66-42 last Tuesday at the Tiger Den.

The Red Devils led 12-11 after the first quarter, but the Tigers came back to outscore Pike in each of the next three periods. Two 3-pointers from Joirdyn Smith in the second quarter helped Fishers move ahead 27-20 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Karina Scott drained a pair of triples, and the Tigers defense held the Red Devils to six points. Fishers led 44-26 going into the fourth quarter, and scored 22 points in that period.

Olivia Smith led Fishers with 11 points, while Joirdyn Smith scored nine. Talia Harris, Kate Thomas and Allison Scheu all added eight points.

The Tigers traveled to North Central last Saturday and won 53-46, marking the first time they beat the Panthers since 2015. Fishers blasted off to a 21-12 lead during the first quarter, hitting five 3s in that period. Harris drained two triples.

The Tigers led 32-23 at halftime. North Central cut into the Tigers lead slightly in the third quarter, but Fishers was still in front 44-37, and held on in the fourth quarter to win with timely defensive stops.

Harris and Olivia Smith both had 13 points. Alycia Triplett added nine points, followed by Joirdyn Smith and Scheu with six points each. Hailey Smith had four points and Thomas scored two.

The Tigers are 15-2 and play at Brownsburg Friday as part of a Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls-boys doubleheader.

University saw a double-digit lead slip away last Tuesday night before rallying in the last two minutes of the game to pull out a thrilling 59-57 win over Western at The U Center.

The Trailblazers led 25-14 midway through the second quarter and 34-26 early in the third quarter. The Panthers clawed back with some strong defense and pulled within 42-41 when Lauren Bradley made a 35-foot shot at the third quarter buzzer than bounced high off the back of the rim and fell through the net.

Western took their first lead since 2-0 early in the fourth quarter when Mackenize York made a three pointer. The game was tied at 48 midway through the fourth quarter and remained scoreless for nearly two minutes until Western scored five quick points to take a 53-48 lead with 2:04 left.

Kelsey DuBois got the Blazers within 53-50 with a bucket with 1:37 remaining.  University’s pressure defense resulted in a steal that led to two Jordan Patterson free throws with 1:03 left.  The Blazers forced a turnover with 59 seconds left. DuBois kicked the ball out to Patterson in the right corner and the senior nailed a clutch three pointer to put University up 55-53 with 48 seconds left.  The Trailblazers made it a two-possession game after DuBois corralled a defensive rebound and got the ball to Patterson who found Kiera Bright for a breakaway layup and a 57-53 lead with 28 seconds remaining.

After a Caroline Long basket for Western, Patterson was fouled with 11.7 seconds left and calmly made a pair of free throws for a 59-55 lead.  Western scored with five seconds left but were out of timeouts and University was able to let the clock expire before inbounding the ball.

DuBois had a game-high 17 points on 7 for 11 shooting. The senior had a team-leading nine rebounds. Payton Seay had 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. Patterson scored seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter and handed out five assists. Taylor Seay had nine points, including seven in the first quarter before fouling out with 5:33 left on an offensive foul call.  Kamryn Washington had five big assists for University. The Blazers had 17 assists on 20 made baskets.

University had a much easier game last Saturday, cruising past Covenant Christian 64-26 at the U Center. The Trailblazers led 20-6 after one period and 45-11 at halftime. University scored 13 seconds into the third quarter to institute a running clock for the remainder of the game.

DuBois had 17 points, with Patterson making three triples on her way to 16 points. Payton Seay scored 15 points. Also scoring were Taylor Seay with six, Keira Bright with five and Kamryn Washington with two.

The Trailblazers are 12-4 and host Guerin Catholic on Thursday, then play in the Pioneer Conference championship game on Saturday.

Hamilton Southeastern team dropped a tough game last Thursday at Warren Central, 52-44.

The Warriors led 16-11 after one quarter and 30-18 at halftime. Southeastern made a comeback in the third quarter, cutting Warren’s lead to 40-35, but the Warriors were able to hold on in the fourth period.

Riley Makalusky scored 20 points, while Maya Makalusky had 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Olivia Brown led the rebounds with eight and also handed out five assists. Kennedy Holman collected seven rebounds while Teegan Acres pulled five.

The Royals are 15-2 and host Ben Davis on Tuesday and Westfield Friday as part of a HCC girls-boys doubleheader.

Westfield put together a superior defensive effort last Wednesday.

The Shamrocks beat Bishop Chatard 41-13 in a home game at CSI Gymnasium. Westfield was in control from the beginning, leading the Trojans 11-1 after one quarter and 22-4 at halftime.

The Rocks never allowed Chatard more than five points in one period. Those 13 total points were the lowest total a Westfield team allowed an opponent since Nov. 28, 2009, when the Shamrocks beat Harrison 40-12.

Lindsey Van Dyke scored 13 points to lead the Westfield scoring. Ellie Kelleher had an outstanding all-around game with eight rebounds, eight assists and seven points. Kiki Loveless collected six rebounds, while Aubrey Crockett pulled five rebounds; both Loveless and Crockett blocked two shots.

The Shamrocks are 10-7 and play the HCC doubleheader at Southeastern on Friday, then travel to Indian Creek on Saturday.

Carmel dropped a 45-29 away game last Thursday at Center Grove.

The Trojans led 11-4 after one quarter and 21-9 at halftime. Center Grove extended its lead to 34-16 after three periods. The Greyhounds scored 13 points in the fourth, with Taryn Fisher contributing eight points.

Fisher and Hannah Lach both finished with nine points. Lach also collected nine rebounds.

Carmel beat Fort Wayne South Side 70-27 last Saturday in an away game. Stats from that game were not available at press time.

The Greyhounds are 2-14 and host Columbus North on Tuesday, then play Saturday at Mishawaka Marian.
