Free program makes physics fun

Another season just wrapped of Science of Light & Sound, a lively and interactive one-hour program in which the Center’s clever Production Team uses the Payne & Mencias Palladium’s lighting and audio systems to reinforce the concepts kids are learning in their elementary science classes. Offered free to student groups, this season’s six sessions drew nearly 1,400 attendees from public, private, and home-based schools across central Indiana. Watch a quick recap and read this story about the closing presentation on May 5.

For educators scouting field trips for the 2026-2027 school year, Science of Light & Sound will be offered on eight dates from October through April, including two presentations open to homeschool groups. Transportation grants are available to help defray travel costs. There’s still room for you & yours

  • The next round of the Beginner Ukulele Class runs Wednesday nights from July 8 through Aug. 5. Folks aged 14 and up can learn the essential chords and strums in a casual group setting for $63 total. In other words, this might be the easiest imaginable way to learn a musical instrument.
  • Jungle Jams day camp for ages 5 to 7 still has a few spaces for your favorite youngsters to learn basic music concepts, make their own instruments, and build their sense of community and self-esteem through fun physical activities. The cost is only $130 for all five morning sessions July 20 to 24.
  • Your path to humor stardom begins with the Center’s Intro to Standup Comedy class, which returns Monday nights Sept. 14 to Oct. 5 and culminates in a Graduation Performance Oct. 9 in the Studio Theater. For a modest $200, you will survey the history of the art form, learn some fundamentals, write your own “tight five” routine and start your uproarious future now. The new instructor, Sherra Lasley, is a nationally touring comic sometimes heard on The Bob & Tom Show.

Prism Project serves twice as many

The Prism Project, the performing arts camp for young folks with disabilities, is underway for its fourth season. Thanks to generous donor, sponsor, and grant support, the Center has expanded to two sections this year, morning and afternoon, to accommodate 40 children and young adults living with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities. These Performers – guided by experienced arts instructors and supported by 1-to-1 Buddies – are developing live stage shows based on their own unique talents and interests. Public premieres are set for 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. June 20 at the Studio Theater.

Book club: glamour & intrigue in the arts

The Palladium Bookies reading club will gather next at 6:30 p.m. June 8 to discuss Dancer by Colum McCann, a novelization of the epic life of ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev. On the menu for Aug. 10 is Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan, a tale of jazz-related intrigue in pre- and postwar Berlin.

Participation in this exclusive group involves a rigorous three-step admissions process:

  1. Read, listen to, or otherwise absorb the selected book.
  2. RSVP to Outreach@TheCenterPresents.org.
  3. Show up and chat! Or just listen!
