This May, in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, members from Hamilton County Professional Fire Fighters Local 4416 (Local 4416) will wear specially designed shirts while on duty to raise awareness and support mental health in the fire service.

Participating fire departments include Cicero, Fishers, Jackson Township, Noblesville, Sheridan, Westfield, and White River Township.

While first responders are known for protecting their communities, the emotional toll of the job often goes unseen.

“Fire fighters, paramedics, and EMTs don’t just respond to emergencies; they absorb them,” Local 4416 President Jim Butts said. “The public sees the response. What they don’t see is what stays with our members after the call is over.”

Repeated exposure to traumatic incidents, combined with long hours, sleep disruption, and high-stress environments, can significantly impact mental health. Many responders also experience ongoing hypervigilance and cumulative stress, which can affect both their professional and personal lives.

Cultural stigma within the profession can make it difficult to seek help, and the impact often extends to families as well. Nationally, suicide rates among fire fighters, paramedics, and EMTs remain higher than the general population. Highlighting the need for continued awareness and support.

Throughout the month, Local 4416 members will wear shirts displaying the message “Extinguish the Stigma”, reinforcing a commitment to open conversations and breaking down barriers around mental health.

“This is about readiness, not weakness,” Butts added. “Taking care of mental health is just as important as physical fitness; it ensures our members can perform, lead, and live well.”

Local 4416 will also share weekly resources to encourage conversation, peer support, and self-reflection both on and off duty.

By bringing these challenges into the open, Local 4416 aims to reduce stigma, encourage early intervention, and ensure those who serve their communities receive the support they deserve.
