Carmel Utilities announced on Friday, May 1 the reopening of the Founders Park retention pond for normal public use following a temporary closure.

The pond was closed on Tuesday, April 21, when an alleged drunk driver struck equipment that was part of a sewer lining project, causing damage to utility infrastructure and a sewer system overflow. Since that time, Carmel Utilities conducted daily inspections of the pond and surrounding areas, in compliance of regulatory guidance from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Hamilton County Emergency Response Agency, to ensure environmental safety and proper water quality.

Water samples have been collected and analyzed each day since the closure, with the most current test results confirming that E. coli levels have returned to normal ranges typical of a retention pond without an aeration fountain. Throughout the monitoring period, no adverse impacts to aquatic life were observed.

Carmel Utilities appreciates the public’s patience and understanding during this temporary closure and remains committed to protecting public health and the environment.
