During the week of Sept. 22 to 26, Sheridan High School (SHS) students and staff celebrated College GO! Week. This week was filled full of opportunities for all students, but especially seniors, as they prepare to take the next step in their journey of life.
Seniors who are applying for college wrote their “why” on small College GO! Week posters. The posters were prominently displayed in the halls. Some of these students even shared about why they are applying to college in a short video that was shown to students and staff. It was also posted on ParentSquare for families to see.
In addition to sharing all their reasons for applying to college, seniors were asked to report back about where they have been accepted. Using that information, the college and university logos of each school where SHS seniors have been accepted will be displayed in the halls for all to see.
All week long, select Indiana colleges and universities offered free applications to their school. Many Sheridan seniors took advantage of this opportunity. Early College Coordinator Jill Cali led the way as she even offered support to seniors in her classroom every day on their college applications. She was available to answer a myriad of questions, as SHS seniors worked through the strenuous application process, discussed next steps, and inquired about college essay topics.
Also, throughout the week students and staff celebrated their college spirit with various dress-up days. Each day, staff represented their colleges of choice, and students represented as well with college gear, bright clothing because their future is so bright, career-inspired clothing, and Blackhawk spirit wear because their future starts at SHS.

These students are looking ahead to life after high school, so they also attended a Future Fair on Thursday, Oct. 2. During this event students were given the chance to meet with various college representatives from four-year universities, Ivy Tech, certification programs, and even The Pursuit Institute. No matter what students’ plans are after high school, they were able to make connections and facilitate conversations that will prepare them for their future.
Juniors Giovanni Barras and Kameron Alexander said, “We thought the career fair was great and provided a good selection, not to mention the fact that the college representatives were very helpful.”
Seniors Jaden Dunbar, Brayden Whisman, Brady Hammack, Steele Townsend, and Josue Rodriguez all dittoed that sentiment by sharing they appreciated all the opportunities shown to them and how they can plan for their future.
Every day teachers and staff at Sheridan are influencing and encouraging students to put their best foot forward, so that they are better prepared and ready for the world beyond the halls of Sheridan High School.
Cali put it best when she said, “Even if you think you know your future plans, you never know when you’ll connect with someone who can help you later down the road.”
Sheridan Community Schools will continue to grow its Early College program in the future so that it offers support to every student on their next step, whether it is college, career, or even both.
