Water main hydrant flushing enhances water quality, reliability & fire protection
Indiana American Water will start its annual water main flushing of its distribution system in Noblesville beginning Monday, Sept. 8 and running through Oct. 31. Crews will be opening fire hydrants to flush the systems primarily on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Indiana American Water conducts the annual maintenance program of its water distribution system to continue providing customers with high-quality, reliable water service. In addition, it gives an opportunity for the company to make sure its fire hydrants are operational. Indiana American Water is responsible for nearly 32,000 fire hydrants in more than 50 communities across the state.
According to Noblesville Senior Operations Superintendent Greg Stephens, “Water main and fire hydrant flushing is an important part of a regular maintenance program for water distribution systems. Indiana American Water consistently meets or exceeds all drinking water standards.”
Indiana American Water Vice President of Operations Kari Britto said flushing helps remove contaminants from the system.
“Flushing our system helps to clean out any build-up of mineral deposits and sediment inside the pipes,” Britto said. “These deposits can occur when there is a reduced water demand. We also flush our hydrants to confirm they are operational and to check fire flows in our system.”
Customers may experience a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration during flushing. Customers should refrain from doing laundry while it is taking place in or near their neighborhood.
If tap water is discolored, Indiana American Water recommends allowing several cold-water faucets to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear more quickly.
