A Marion County program designed to help accused speeders keep infractions off their driving records by paying a fee will make a change as speed limits increase on Interstate 465 on Tuesday.
The speed limit change, from 55 mph to 65 mph, is a result of House Enrolled Act 1461. The speed limit will stay 55 mph between 86th Street and 96th Street on the northwest side of Indianapolis due to the road’s design. Also, the northwest corner of I-465 – in Indianapolis and Boone County – at the interchange with I-865 will stay at 55 mph.
The Safe Driver Deferral Program of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said in a notice issued Wednesday that eligibility for deferral of speeding infractions starting Tuesday will be limited to those driving from 1 to 15 mph over the posted speed limit.
Examples of common offenses eligible for deferral include minor speeding offenses, improper lane usage, and disregarding road signage. Offenses that are not eligible for deferral include speeding in school zones, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, and school bus stop-arm violations.
The changes made were outlined in a Vision Zero Task Force draft report, released during a meeting Wednesday, as improvements needed in Marion County for traffic safety. The Vision Zero report also called on the Indianapolis Fatal Crash Review Team to complete road safety audits at high-injury intersections instead of crossings with the most crashes in the previous two months. Ten intersections are to be identified, the draft report said.
