Blacksmithing is alive and well in Indiana. If you have ever wondered what it takes to turn raw metal into something useful, the Indiana Blacksmithing Association (IBA) will beat the daylight out of your curiosity June 6 to 8 at the 43rd annual Conference at the Tipton County Fairgrounds, 1200 S. Main St., Tipton.
IBA members are planning an event where blacksmiths and the public can get together to learn new skills and forge lasting friendships.
Demonstrators for this year’s conference will be Jennifer Petrila of Rutledge, Mass., Nate Weiss of Jonestown, Penn., and Noah Hickman of Atlanta, Ind. These skilled smiths will share their knowledge and help continue to grow the art of blacksmithing in Indiana.
IBA was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1981 to gather and disseminate information about blacksmithing, expose the public to blacksmithing, and encourage the training of blacksmiths. It follows that same path today.
IBA members come from across Indiana and adjoining states. They come from many occupations. For some this is a business, but for many it is an opportunity to broaden skills in a friendly atmosphere.
Whether you are a craftsman or someone who just wants to watch, you will be welcome on June 6 to 8 in Tipton.
Keep reading The Reporter for more information and a feature on a young local blacksmith as the conference draws closer. In the meantime, hammer this date into your calendar now so you can quench your curiosity and forge a new understanding of the art of working metal.
