The Noblesville Fire Department (NFD) held a ceremony Tuesday to recognize Firefighter James “Corky” Lonaker for his more than 20 years of service to the citizens of Noblesville.
From an early age, Lonaker had a passion for boxing, amassing an amateur record of 76-6. Corky was a member of the National Junior Olympics Team and was a twp-time Silver Gloves National Runner-up. After turning professional, Lonaker became the WBC Continental America’s Junior Lightweight Champion and was ranked as high as eighth in the world. He retired with a professional career record of 28-3-1.
After hanging up the gloves, Lonaker worked full-time as a Nuclear Quality Inspector at Major Tool & Machine in Indianapolis. He began his career at NFD in November 2004. During his more than 20 years of service, he was awarded the Lifesaver Award and multiple Unit Citations. He also coached numerous NFD members in the 911 Slugfest, a fire versus police boxing competition that directly supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
Lonaker said he plans to spend more time with his family but has no plans to slow down, as he has already agreed to continue working at Major Tool & Machine.
“We will miss his fun-loving, easy-going demeanor,” Fire Chief Matt Mitchell said. “We wish Corky and his wife, Kim, the best of luck in whatever their future holds.”
