CARMEL – The University girls fell to Decatur Central 51-37 Tuesday at the U Center for the Trailblazers’ Senior Night game.

The Class 4A Hawks gradually built a 19-11 halftime lead over 2A University. The ‘Blazers stayed in the game thanks to one of their seniors: Anyah Turley scored seven points in the first half. (University’s other senior, Taylor Seay, was injured and unable to play.)

“We just looked like we were out of it a bit,” said ‘Blazers coach Lisa Pryor. “A little disjointed, which I’m not sure where that came from. It’s disappointing because we had a couple of good practices. We’ve also been off and haven’t played since the PAAC championship a week and a half ago, and I think that probably contributed.”

Decatur Central led 32-22 after three quarters, although the Trailblazers kept the Hawks’ lead in single digits for most of the period. Turley scored four points in the early stages of the third, with Culp making a 3-pointer late in the period.

Leah Norvell opened the fourth quarter by hitting a jumper, but Decatur Central answered with back-to-back layins. The Hawks kept their lead over 10 points from that point forward, but University didn’t go away: Norvell totaled seven points in the quarter and Sydney Culp hit two 3s.

“They bust their butts,” said Pryor. “They work, they do what we ask them to do. They have good attitudes for the most part. I can’t be mad at their effort, right? I’m not mad at them anyway. We have to learn how to handle certain situations a little bit better. It’s not even just adversity. We get a packed gym and then I think they got a little anxious.”

The Trailblazers had only six players available, but all six of them scored at least one point. Turley led the way with 11 points, while Sydney Culp and Norvell both scored eight points.

University is 8-11 and finishes the regular season Thursday at Speedway. That game starts at 6 p.m.
