University’s girls clinched at least a tie of their seventh consecutive Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference North Division championship with a 55-18 win over Muncie Burris Friday night at The U Center.
Taylor Seay had 15 points to lead a balanced Trailblazer attack as University won its 23rd consecutive PAAC North game. Anyah Turley had 13 points, Leah Norvell 10, Gabby Culp nine and Mack Feeney six as the Blazers evened their record at 4-4.
Turley opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game before the Owls ran off five points to take a 5-2 lead. Turley made another basket before Feeney scored off a pass from Culp to put University ahead for good at 6-5. The Blazers outscored Burris 14-2 over the last six minutes of the opening period to lead 16-7. Turley had six points in the opening period and Culp five.
Five different Blazers had a basket in the second quarter as University led by as many as 18 before taking a 28-12 lead to the locker room at halftime.
University put the game away in the third period, scoring the first 16 points of the quarter. Norvell had seven in the third as the Blazers led 44-14 entering the final stanza.
The Trailblazers dominated the boards in the contest, pulling down a season-high 54 rebounds. Culp led with 12 while Feeney had 10 caroms. Seay and Norvell each had eight rebounds.
University passed the ball well, picking up assists on 20 of its 22 made field goals. Feeney had a team-high seven assists and a team-high six steals.
University’s game scheduled for Saturday against PAAC North foe Liberty Christian has been postponed at Liberty Christian’s request due to a lack of players available. The University and Liberty Christian boys will play Saturday with the junior varsity start time changed to 6 p.m. at The U Center with the varsity to follow.
University’s girls are back in action Thursday when they host Bishop Chatard at The U Center.
