Lacrosse: Carmel & Southeastern boys face off at state championship on Saturday

The Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern boys lacrosse teams advanced to the championship match of the Class 2A state tournament with semifinal wins on Wednesday.

Both teams played at their respective home fields. The Greyhounds beat Cathedral 12-7 at Carmel Stadium. The ‘Hounds led 7-2 at halftime.

Quinn Huber and Kyle Fedorcha both scored three goals for Carmel, with Leo Hammons adding two goals. Charles Marsh, Jack Henney, Leo Prosser and Jackson Weaver all added one goal.

Cole Roseman collected six ground balls, with Mason Buttery picking up five ground balls and Brock Rose getting four. Mason Bardwell, Marsh and Corbin Crossen all had four caused turnovers, and Buttery made eight saves.

“I’m glad we came out with energy and a little bit of pep in our step,” said Greyhounds coach Jack Meachum. “Some penalties tied us up there in the later portion of the game, but our guys did a good job of just battling through adversity. It was a good win and excited for the boys to be moving on to state.”

The Royals defeated South Bend St. Joseph 11-2 in their semifinal game at TCU Field. Southeastern led the Indians 6-0 at halftime and cruised through the second half as well in a game that featured the defending 2A state champion taking on the defending 1A state champion.

Colin Krekeler made 13 goalkeeper saves. Shane Gastineau scored two goals, handed out three assists, and on defense had two ground balls and a caused turnover. Gavin Berry put in three goals and collected one ground ball.

Dillon O’Rourke helped out on defense with four ground balls and a caused turnover, while Gavin Wright scored one goal.

Carmel and Southeastern will play for the 2A state championship at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Roncalli.
