WESTFIELD – The Westfield swim team hosted Guerin Catholic Thursday for their Senior Night meet at the beautiful new Westfield Aquatic Center.
The Shamrocks won both sides of the meet, as the girls team was victorious 150-33 and the boys team was a 98-72 winner. Both schools had winners in each division, and it was a chance for Westfield to celebrate its seniors, as the Shamrocks did traditional Senior Night activities and honored Jack Kelleher, a Westfield swimmer who passed away from cancer four years ago; Shamrocks coach Darrick Thomas said it was a “celebration of his life and everything that that family has meant to our community and to our team.”
Westfield’s girls team won 11 of the 12 events, with eight different Shamrocks winning eight individual events. Ellie Ketcham was a double winner in the 100 freestyle and backstroke. Other Westfield winners were Annie Spaletto in the 200 free, Alexa Boillat in the individual medley, Ava Friedman in the 50 free, Ellie Lee in diving Macy Hoaglan in the breaststroke, and all three relays.
Bridget Keller picked up the Golden Eagles’ lone victory, winning the 500 free.
In the boys meet, Westfield won six of the 11 events (diving was not contested). Aaron Hand placed first in the 100 free, Aiden Yonkus paced the 500 free, Luca Barbosa was first in the backstroke and Ben Ice won the breaststroke. The Shamrocks also were first in the medley and 200 free relay.
Guerin Catholic’s Quinn Sweeney was a double winner in the 200 free and butterfly. Drew Wilhite won the IM, while Grant Bricking led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 free. The Golden Eagles finished the meet with a win in the 400 free relay.
Thomas said it was “nice to be here,” considering the uncertain circumstances surrounding athletics right now. He was happy the Shamrocks were able to have the meet so the team could properly recognize their seniors. Thomas praised Guerin Catholic as well.
“I appreciate their sportsmanship in all this and wish them the best of luck moving forward, and we’re really looking forward to our championship season,” said Thomas.
Golden Eagles coach Missy McCracken said her girls team was at “half capacity” due to illness, “so we did a fantastic job for what we had to work with, and a lot of kids swam back-to-back events, so they did great. The boys did fantastic. We had a lot of kids do best times for the first time.”
