‘Blazers get 12th straight victory

The Class 2A No. 8 University girls overcame an 11-point third-quarter deficit to win their 12th consecutive game, 58-52 over the Indianapolis Homeschool Wildcats.
The Trailblazers were once again led by the trio of Payton Seay (18 points, eight rebounds) Patty Chikamba (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Kelsey DuBois (17 points, eight rebounds) as University improved to 14-2. The Wildcats lost their second consecutive game after opening the season with 17 wins.
The Wildcats led throughout most of the first half, taking a 15-5 lead late in the first quarter and holding a 28-17 advantage midway through the second quarter. The Wildcats lead was 32-23 at halftime.
Emma Barnes scored two baskets early in the third quarter for the Wildcats sandwiching a DuBois rebound basket for a 36-25 Homeschool lead with 6:30 remaining. The Trailblazers maintained their poise and scored the next 11 points, erasing the deficit in less than four minutes. Chikamba started the rally with an old fashioned three point play before Seay made two straight baskets. Chikamba had the next two baskets, including the game tying hoop with 2:20 left to knot the score at 36. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with DuBois scoring twice, and the count was 40-40 after three periods.
The Trailblazers scored the first three points of the fourth quarter on a DuBois basket and Seay foul shot before the Wildcats Gloria Brewer tied the game back up with three of her game high 29 points. Seay immediately answered with a three pointer for University and the Trailblazers led the rest of the way.
Baskets by DuBois and Chikamba and a Seay foul shot put University up 51-45 with 3:17 left before Brewer had a pair of field goals to cut the lead to 51-50. The Trailblazers finished out the game with strong defense and clutch free throw shooting. University made seven of eight free throw attempts in final two minutes with Chikamba making four, DuBois one and Kamryn Washington two while holding the Wildcats to a single basket.
University had 34 rebounds, including 15 offensive boards.
Brewer scored the Wildcats last 16 points of the game.
The Trailblazers will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host the PAAC championship game against the winner of Friday night’s contest between Greenwood Christian Academy and Bethesda Christian.
