Westfield roundup: ‘Rocks tennis wins opener

The Westfield girls tennis team opened its season Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Brownsburg in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference dual meet.
The No. 14-ranked Shamrocks swept all three singles matches in straight sets. No. 1 Isabella Norris was a 6-0, 6-1 winner, with No. 2 Alana Raymond getting a 6-2, 6-4 victory. No. 3 Addi Kooi won her match 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, No. 1 Brianna Saylor and Emma Schwind dropped their match 6-2, 6-1, while No. 2 Lauren Hammond and Chloe Carlson fell in a close match, 6-4, 7-5.
Westfield hosts No. 9 Avon this afternoon for another HCC dual meet.

The Westfield boys track and field team hosted Zionsville Tuesday night in its first dual meet after coming back from Spring Break.
The Eagles won the meet 73-54, but the Shamrocks had several good performances. In the field events, Dillon Theineman had an outstanding jump of 21 feet, 2 inches in the long jump. Theineman won the event by over a foot, and his jump places him as one of the top five long jumpers in Westfield boys team history. Notably, Thieneman is in his first year of track, and has only competed in this event a few times.
Sam Toney set a new personal record in the high jump with a leap of 5-8. Tyler Dikos and freshman Robert Campbell also all jumped 5-8. In the discus, Hayden Netral notched a new personal best of 124-7 inches, placing second overall. William Goodvine and Vance Farrar had big throws, with Goodvine finishing second with a throw of 41-5.5, with Farrar just behind him at 40-10.
In the running events, the Shamrocks swept the 400 dash with Brady Fischer, Jake Good, and Max Woehler finishing 1-2-3 in that order. Jayden Bernavil finished second in the 300 hurdles, breaking 44 seconds with a time of 43.95. Colin Lakomek took home the win in a competitive 800 field. Landon King made his 800 debut and ran a very impressive 2 minutes, 9 seconds. Anthony Sulewski also had a solid race in the 800, as did freshmen Landon Jones and Will Snedeker. In the 1600, John Degan had another nice time drop, running 5:06 and getting closer to the 5-minute barrier.
The Shamrocks are back in action at the two showcase meets on Friday night, at Franklin Central and Lafayette Jefferson.

The Westfield softball team dropped an HCC game at Brownsburg on Tuesday, 12-2 in six innings.
The Shamrocks scored both of their runs in the third inning. Maggie Roh led off with a single, then Avery Parker hit a two-run home run into left field. Natalie Deck also had a hit.
Westfield is 2-3 and plays Friday at Lawrence Central.
