Westfield Middle School girls rugby team wins 2026 spring championship

The Westfield Middle School (WMS) girls rugby team recently capped off an incredible season by winning the Rugby Indiana 2026 Spring Championship, showcasing the growth, determination, and teamwork that defined the program throughout the year.

The championship match tested the team from the very beginning. A change in substitution rules meant players had to stay on the field much longer than they were accustomed to during the regular season, requiring coaches and players to adjust their strategy on the fly.

Despite the challenge, the Shamrocks never backed down.

In the championship match against Pendleton Rugby, after battling their way to a 15-15 tie at the end of regulation, the match moved into overtime. In just eight minutes of extra play, Westfield scored three additional tries to secure a 30-15 victory and claim the Rugby Indiana 2026 Spring Championship title.

“Some of the plays were so beautiful, Assistant Coach Warren and I were tearing up and in true awe of our girls,” Coach Bailey Mobley said. “It just truly showed how all the hard work and practices were making such a difference.”

The Rugby Indiana 2026 Spring Championship marks a major milestone for a program that was established just last year and has already grown significantly through the dedication of its student-athletes, coaches, and families.

“The middle school girls’ club started last year,” Coach Mobley said. “This year we gained almost double the amount of girls thanks to the team’s commitments and recruiting skills. So many girls would be at practices early and doing extra work to get to where they are today. It took the entire team.”

Coach Mobley and Assistant Coach Warren often encouraged their athletes with the call and response “No matter the outcome, don’t forget what we are…” “Strong, independent Rugby women!”
