Guerin Catholic kept its record perfect on Friday, beating Heritage Christian 35-21 at the Eagles’ Nest.
The Class 3A No. 5 Golden Eagles were in a tough battle with 2A No. 6 Heritage in the first half, which finished in a 14-14 tie. Ryan Zimmerman caught a 71-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, then Justin Zdobylak scored on a six-yard run in the second quarter.
Things began to turn Guerin Catholic’s way in the third quarter, in which the Golden Eagles shut out Heritage. Meanwhile, GC’s Harrison Miller connected with Zimmerman for a 27-yard touchdown pass play to put the Golden Eagles ahead 21-14.
Miller and Zimmerman teamed up for a 32-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Heritage Christian scored again to stay within 28-21, but Zdobylak’s two-yard run sealed the victory Evan Guenthner kicked all five extra-point kicks.
“I think our guys just calmed down at halftime, stopped making the mistakes they were making earlier,” said Guerin Catholic coach Tom Dilley. The coach said his team made “some good simple adjustments” and went back to what it was good at.
“There weren’t really any earth-shattering adjustments, it was just calm down and execute,” said Dilley.
The Golden Eagles host Brebeuf Jesuit next Friday for their first Circle City Conference game of the season.
