Dear Editor:

As winners and losers are sorted out following Tuesday’s primary elections across Hamilton County, the big loser was local government itself.

According to the county’s Elections Office, 33,383 citizens voted out of 245,369 eligible voters. That means 13.6 percent of the county’s voting population actually voted. So, for every person who voted, seven did not.

In a democracy, one gets the kind of government one deserves.

For the time being, six out of seven Hamilton County voters have no basis of complaint.

Sad state of affairs given a county where 60.5 percent of the population over 25 has a college degree or higher, according to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Come November, will the turnout be even smaller?
