A roundabout look at Carmel events

Submitted

The Omnibus Show is a podcast hosted by Dave Gibbs “for people who love interviews of interesting and accomplished people, and who are life learners.”

Monday’s episode featured Melanie Brewer and Anne O’Brien from the City of Carmel. Brewer is the Senior Project Manager for Community Relations & Economic Development, and O’Brien is the Project Manager and Carmel Arts & Design District Liaison.

Brewer

Brewer, who has worked for the City of Carmel for 18 years, looks at what Carmel looks like as the city’s leadership transitions from Mayor Jim Brainard to the next mayor. She goes on to discuss the development, including all the roundabouts, groundbreakings, and grand openings she has been a part of.

“There are about 120 annual events managed by the city,” Brewer said. “We get a taste of everything in Carmel.”

Brewer went on to say how fun it has been to watch the city and her department grow from two employees to 10 as new events have come onboard. She also serves on the board for the Carmel Youth Assistance Program and explained how it came to be and just how important it is.

“Children are our future. People come here to feel safe and to have things to do,” Brewer said. The Youth Assistance Program exists for people who live here who find they need help. The Program works with families directly and helps with anything from monetary assistance to mentoring and tutoring. There is a stigma here that we are well off and have great jobs. What we forget is there are other needs. We’re not untouchable to issues and situations where families need help.”

O’Brien

O’Brien, who has been with the city for two years, describes how the events change with the seasons, and highlights some of the new things you’ll see this winter – including new winter garden houses in addition to the igloos seen around town, and a special Leap Day Birthday Party to round out the season at The Ice at Carter Green.

The Sept. 25 episode of The Omnibus Show will feature author, speaker, and coach Missy Shopshire.

Shopshire

Shopshire started her career in sales, reaching the top 2 percent in a multi-billion-dollar company. She held that position for over 10 years, during which she learned the importance of building a team, leading them well, and working toward a shared vision of success. Then, a near-death experience caused her to reevaluate her life.

Leaving the sales industry at the top of her game, she switched gears to become a certified life and business coach. Now, she helps leaders do what she learned to do – align with a higher purpose and achieve their true potential.
