Baseball: GC, Heights, Noblesville all get big wins

The Guerin Catholic baseball team clinched the Circle City Conference championship by sweeping Roncalli this week.

The series began Tuesday with the Class 3A No. 2 Golden Eagles beating the Royals 15-5 in a five-inning home game. Roncalli led 3-0 in the middle of the third inning, but Guerin Catholic got going after that with six runs in the bottom of the third. The Golden Eagles then added five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth; Will Fremion drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cuinn Morrow for the game-finishing run.

Davis Wagner and AJ Nunley both had three hits for Guerin Catholic, with Nunley batting in three runs. Sam Tabor scored three runs and drove in two. Tate Troxell, Morrow and Karson Smith each had two RBIs. Wagner, Morrow and Troxell each hit a double. Wagner pitched all five innings, striking out seven.

The Golden Eagles traveled to the Royals’ field on Wednesday, and won 9-7 to come home with the sweep.

Guerin Catholic scored three runs in the second inning. Morrow singled in Nolan Ratcliff for the first run, then Nate Gremelspacher’s left field hit sent Morrow and Aiden Ochall home.

In the fourth inning, Wagner led off with a walk, and was soon home: Tabor cracked a home run to left field. Ratcliff later scored on an error, then Morrow hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Ochall.

With that, GC led 7-0. Roncalli worked its way back to tie the game at 7-7 by the sixth inning, but the Golden Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh. Wagner scored on a wild pitch, then Troxell got home on a passed ball.

Bryson Dorsey had two hits for Guerin Catholic. Gremelspacher got the win in four innings of relief, starter Troxell threw five strikeouts in three innings.

The Golden Eagles are 8-0 in conference play and 20-2 overall. Guerin Catholic plays another CCC game Friday, taking on Heritage Christian at Victory Field.

Hamilton Heights sailed to a 5-1 win over Madison-Grant in a Monday home game.

The Huskies scored their first run in the second inning, when Kyle Michael hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Dillon Pitts. The Argylls tied the game in the top of the third with an RBI triple, but Heights got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Phoenix Vondersaar singled in Adam Hughes.

Alex Eubanks hit a two-RBI single in the fourth inning, bringing home Kaleb Murray and Nick Hulen. Heights added another run in the sixth inning when Pitts drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Murray, who finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate.

Alex Rickey went three innings for the pitching win.

The Huskies are 11-7 and play Friday at Twin Lakes in the Hoosier Conference third-place game.

Noblesville has moved up to No. 2 in the Class 4A rankings, and the Millers added another win on Tuesday by beating Kokomo 4-0 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.

Noblesville scored two runs in the second inning. Aiden Ramsey got the first run when Hunter Corbett hit a sacrifice line-out. Trevor Corbett then scored Conner Seago with a base hit.

The Millers added a run in the third inning when Jacob Edwards smacked a right field hit to score Bryce Riggs. Trevor Corbett scored in the fourth inning when Jack Shade hit a sacrifice fly.

Trevor Corbett, Aiden Reynolds, Riggs and Edwards all had two hits, with Ramsey and Reynolds both hitting one double. Quinton Black pitched a complete game, striking out five against two hits and two walks.

Noblesville is 16-5 and begins an HCC series with Brownsburg tonight at the Bulldogs’ field.

Fishers split a pair of games to start the week.

On Monday, the Tigers beat Yorktown 11-1 in a five-inning away game. Fishers totaled 11 hits, including a 3-for-4 night from Ben Hammond. Huston Dunn and Caulin Brown both had two hits. Dunn, Hammond and Jack Brown each hit one double.

Gavin Clayton, Quinn Seefeldt, Hammond and Brevin Barker all scored two runs, with Dunn and Hammond both batting in two runs. Owen Sanders got the pitching win, tossing four strikeouts in four innings.

On Tuesday, the Tigers lost to Lafayette Jefferson 4-1 in another road contest. Fishers scored its run in the fifth inning, when Noah McPeek hit a sacrifice fly to bring Barker home.

Dunn hit a double in the sixth inning. Nick Schnaiter pitched four innings, striking out six.

The Tigers are 15-10 and begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series today at Franklin Central, then host the Flashes on Friday.

University split two games this week.

On Tuesday, the Trailblazers lost to Brebeuf Jesuit 9-3 in a home game at RoundTripper Academy. Seth Hogg hit a two-run home run for University in the sixth inning.

On Wednesday, the ‘Blazers beat Anderson Prep Academy 33-6 in five innings to finish Pioneer Conference North Division play. Hogg was 4-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles, scoring four runs and driving in three.

Jake Hooker hit a home run, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Jimmy Caldwell also batted in four runs, while Beckett Suh scored four runs and hit a double. Jasper Owens was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Gustavo Padron batted in three runs and hit a double. Hughie Baker scored three runs and Josh Newton hit a double.

University is 4-0 in conference play and 11-10 overall, and hosts Cardinal Ritter this afternoon.

Westfield dropped a Monday home game to Greenfield-Central 7-2.

The Shamrocks scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Collin Lindsey and Matt Drozlek hit singles to start the inning. Later, Tyler Gentry’s left field hit scored Lindsey, then Wilson batted in Drozlek with a right field hit.

Drozlek was 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double, and Caden Lindsey also hit a double.

Westfield is 11-8 and hosts Hamilton Southeastern this evening to begin an HCC series.

Carmel fell to Zionsville 3-0 in a Monday game at Hartman Field.

The Greyhounds were held to two hits, one each from Case Sullivan and Drew Fouts. Gabe Mathison pitched four and two-thirds innings, striking out five.

Carmel is 11-6 and plays tonight at Harrison.

Sheridan dropped two games to Hoosier Heartland Conference opponents this week.

On Tuesday, the Blackhawks lost an away game to Taylor 8-7. The Titans scored three runs in the second inning and held the lead from there.

Sheridan scored two runs in the fourth inning when Roman Clayton tripled in Jacob Jones and Caleb Alexander. In the sixth inning, Alexander scored again when Sebastian Salazar hit a sacrifice fly.

Taylor led 8-3 going into the seventh inning, but the Blackhawks nearly made a comeback. Jones singled in Cole Mackintosh, then Alexander’s center field hit brought in Jack Crail. Jones scored when Salazar was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, then Camden Spencer got hit by a pitch to bring in Alexander. But the Titans got the final out to end the game.

Zach Bales and Gavin Schwerdtfeger both had two hits, with Bales hitting a double. Salazar pitched four innings and struck out seven, allowing only three hits.

Sheridan fell to Delphi 14-2 in a Wednesday five-inning home game. The ‘Hawks scored both of their runs in the fifth inning: Crail was sent in by an Alexander single, then Bales hit a sacrifice fly to score Clayton. Alexander had two hits.

Sheridan is 3-5 in the conference and 8-12 overall, and plays this afternoon at Tipton.
