Baseball: Win after sweet win for Carmel, Fishers, Heights, University & Guerin Catholic on Wednesday

The Fishers baseball team had a tremendous third inning on Wednesday, and that led the Tigers to a 10-0, five-inning win over Avon in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

Fishers scored nine runs in the third inning. Noah McPeek was safe on a fielder’s choice that scored Gavin Kuzniewski. The Tigers loaded the bases, and McPeek scored when Quinn Seefeldt drew a walk.

That would be the first of four straight at-bats where Fishers scored a run. Jack Brown got home on Caulin Brown’s RBI groundout, Evan Doran singled in Gavin Clayton, and Seefeldt got home when Ben Hammond reached on error.

Kuzniewski singled in Doran and Hammond, then McPeek brought Huston Dunn home with a single. Kuzniewski scored on Jack Brown’s RBI groundout, and the Tigers led 9-0. Fishers quickly ended the game in the fifth inning, as McPeek led off with a single, then Jack Brown drove him home on a left field hit for the 10th run, and the run-rule victory.

McPeek was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jack Brown and Kuzniewski both had two hits. Jack Brown pitched all five innings, striking out nine and allowing just three hits.

The Tigers are 6-3 in HCC play and 14-7 overall. Fishers travels to Avon today to complete the conference series.

Hamilton Heights cruised to a 9-1 Hoosier Conference East Division win at Lewis Cass on Wednesday.

The Huskies never trailed, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Alex Eubanks doubled in those runs, scored by Kaleb Murray and Colin Kuhn. The Kings scored a run in the bottom of the inning.

Heights added three runs in the third inning. Murray scored when Eubanks reached on error, Kuhn got home on John Irion’s RBI fielder’s choice, then Adam Hughes scored to make it 5-1, Huskies.

In the fifth inning, Dean Mason led off with a double, then Kuhn came in to run for him. Kuhn was home soon, as he scored on Hughes’ left field single. Hughes later scored on a wild pitch, then Eubanks got home when Dillon Pitts reached on error.

James Lacey completed the Huskies’ scoring in the seventh inning, as his RBI fielder’s choice brought in Phoenix Vondersaar. Alex Rickey went five innings for the pitching win, striking out four.

Heights is 4-3 in division play and 9-6 overall. The Huskies host Cass at 6 p.m. this evening to finish the series.

Carmel, ranked No. 9 in 4A, finished an extra-innings battle at 1A No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic with a flourish on Wednesday, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to win 5-1.

The Greyhounds got on the board first, with a run in the fourth inning. Gabriel Mathison singled in Hunter Snow with a right field base hit. But the Knights tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, hitting three straight singles, the third of which brought in the tying run.

Carmel loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth. Snow stepped up, and he doubled in Josh Thomas and Case Sullivan to put the ‘Hounds ahead 3-1. Tim Haas then smacked a center field single to bring in Snow and JD Stein. Dylan Zenor struck out the LCC side in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the victory.

Snow finished the game with two hits. Cameron Heany went five and two-thirds innings for the win; both he and Zenor threw seven strikeouts.

Carmel is 9-5 and hosts McCutcheon at 6 p.m. tonight at Hartman Field.

Class 2A No. 4 University scored in every inning and five pitchers each worked scoreless innings as the Trailblazers punched their ticket to the PAAC championship game with a 12-0, five-inning win at Seton Catholic on Wednesday.

Sophomore Cam Rady, who worked a clean third inning with two strikeouts, earned the win in relief, with sophomore Hughie Baker also working a clean inning to end the game in the fifth.

At the plate, senior Seth Hogg was 3-for-3 with a double, junior Mark Hamby was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, junior Owen Schellhase went 2-for-3, and sophomore Cooper Burnett went 1-for-3 with a 2-RBI double. Freshman Ryan Castetter walked twice and drove in two runs.

University will play in the PAAC championship game next week, on either May 11 or May 13, against the winner of the Bethesda Christian – Park Tudor game scheduled for May 9. The Trailblazers (10-6, 3-0 PAAC North) return to action tomorrow as they visit 4A No. 13/4 Cathedral for a 5:30 p.m. start.

Guerin Catholic, ranked No. 3 in 3A, took care of 2A No. 5 Park Tudor 8-2 in a Wednesday home game.

The Panthers scored both of their runs in the second inning. The Golden Eagles tied the game with two runs in the fourth: Cuinn Morrow scored on Daulton Phillips’ sacrifice bunt, then AJ Nunley got home to make the score 2-2.

Guerin Catholic took the lead in the fifth inning when Nunley drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Ian Taylor. Nate Gremelspacher came up next, and he hit a grand slam home run to left field, also bringing in Nolan Ratcliff, Morrow and Nunley. Just like that, GC was up 7-2. Taylor scored a run in the sixth inning to complete the Golden Eagles scoring.

Gremelspacher had two hits. Wagner pitched a complete-game win, allowing just two hits.

Guerin Catholic is 16-1 and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Norwell.

Sheridan dropped an 11-0 Hoosier Heartland Conference game to Carroll on Wednesday.

Zach Bales got the lone hit for the Blackhawks.

Sheridan is 2-4 in conference play and 5-9 overall, and hosts Horizon Christian at 5 p.m. this afternoon.
