If you think you might enjoy a story that includes incidents involving counterfeit cheeseburgers, privacy fence jumping heroics, toilet tumblers, poultry perpetrators, or characters such as a one-legged, basement-dwelling boyfriend of an exotic dancer, well, Sign of the Seed may be the novel for you.

Deputy

Local author and Fishers resident Don Deputy has released a new book called Sign of the Seed. Deputy served as a Lawrence police officer for 37 years, as a Detective for 23 years, and was Captain in Charge of Investigations for seven years. He served as his department’s Public Information Officer for 20 years and received the Officer of the Year award twice.

Deputy investigated and successfully prosecuted a homicide that received an eight-second profile on the popular television show America’s Most Wanted. He investigated two criminal cases that ended up in the Indiana Supreme Court with favorable outcomes. In total, he’s investigated everything from the theft of a hamburger to Police Action Shootings and once investigated the theft of Pablo Picasso’s pencil drawing, Femme Vue de Dos.

About Sign of the Seed

The story involves the Templeton Police Department, which is in the midst of its annual Christmas robbery season. During his patrol duties, veteran Officer Jeramy Doodeman witnesses numerous situations demonstrating other people’s faith through signs of the seeds of faith. A series of robberies comes to a climax when Templeton police officers have an armed confrontation with Piper, a small-time hold-up man, at the same time that Jeramy is confronting his faith in God.

Among other characters, Detective Derek Wilson is a policeman who, oddly enough, is uncomfortable with confrontation and has his lack of confidence and bravery put to the ultimate test.

Meanwhile, Officer Teresa O’Brian, a sassy Irish policewoman, is frustrated with the juvenile antics of some fellow officers. Gil, a small-time thief, finds his Gran dead and, fearing the police will blame him for her death, disposes of her body in an usual way.

While there are some adult situations, what this story lacks in gratuitous sex scenes and raunchy cursing is well made up for with compelling situations and easy humor. Sign of the Seed takes a gritty and earthy look inside police work using realistic scenes and easy humor to intersect the often violent and chaotic world of Law Enforcement with faith.
