SHERIDAN – The Sheridan baseball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday, April 11 after taking the first game of a home doubleheader over Lewis Cass.
The Blackhawks won the first game 4-2. Both teams scored one run in the first inning. Levi Gellert hit a sacrifice fly to send Braelan Bochner home and bat in Sheridan’s run.
The Blackhawks put up two runs in the third inning. Bochner got home on an error, then Gellert scored on a wild pitch. The Kings scored in the top of the fifth inning, but Sheridan got the run right back in the bottom of the inning. Chance Spencer hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Bochner; his third run of the game.
Bochner also had a perfect hitting night, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Jake Hall pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing only five hits.
Hawks coach Adam Spencer said his team played “about as we could have played in Game 1.” He was hoping for his team to at least get one out of two games, so he was pleased that his team accomplished that.
“Lewis Cass is a nice ball club,” said Spencer. “Coach [Greg] Marschand is a state championship guy. He’s been doing it for 35-plus years, so anytime you can get a win against his ball club, you feel pretty good about it.”
Cass came back to win the day’s second game 8-2. The Kings led 8-0 by the middle of the fifth inning.
Sheridan scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth; Hall got home on Cesar Cuautle’s RBI groundout. Braylon Sample got home in the seventh inning after Cuautle reached on error.
The Kings held the Blackhawks to two hits, one each from Gellert and Eli Bales.
On Monday, Sheridan cruised past Shortridge 16-1 in a five-inning game. The Hawks scored seven runs in the first inning and finished with five runs in the fourth.
Bochner hit a home run and a double for two hits. Walker McWhorter and Brayden Whitman each hit one double; McWhorter totaled three RBIs while Gellert scored three runs.
Bales got the pitching win, with six strikeouts in three innings. Cuautle pitched the other two innings, tossing five strikeouts and allowing no hits.
Sheridan is 2-3 and hosts Bethesda Christian at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.
