Westfield Washington Schools celebrates opening of Midland Crossing Elementary

On Tuesday evening, July 28, Westfield Washington Schools (WWS) celebrated the opening of Midland Crossing Elementary School with a ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the completion of one of the district’s newest elementary schools.

Educators, school board members, district leaders, project partners, and invited guests gathered to commemorate the opening of the school before welcoming students for the first day of classes on Aug. 17.

Midland Crossing Elementary was thoughtfully designed to provide students with high-quality learning environments including collaborative spaces dedicated to bringing grade-level students together.

As the school’s inaugural principal, Mary Beth Fischer reflected on the opportunities the building will create for students and families.

“As we stand here today, it’s exciting to imagine everything that will happen when we welcome students on August 17,” Fischer said. “Very soon, these hallways will be filled with laughter, creativity, and exploration. Classrooms will become places where students challenge themselves, build confidence, develop friendships, and grow into capable, compassionate young people.”

Rebecca Ogle, president of the WWS Board of School Trustees, said this new elementary school will keep building the district’s legacy of educational excellence.

“Midland Crossing is an important part of the next chapter for Westfield Washington Schools, helping us welcome new families while continuing the tradition of excellence that defines our district. Our Board is excited to welcome the Midland Explorers into the Westfield Washington Schools family. We cannot wait to see the friendships they build, the lessons they learn, and the memories they create within these walls for many years to come.”

Superintendent Dr. John Atha emphasized that while Midland Crossing is a new building, it reflects the same experience found throughout WWS.

“As students and families walk through these doors, they will find the same commitment to excellence, high expectations, and student-centered learning that exists throughout every school in our district,” Atha said.

During the ceremony, district leaders also thanked the Board of School Trustees, project partners, architects, construction teams, educators, and community members whose collaboration helped bring the new school to fruition.

Midland Crossing Elementary will soon welcome its inaugural class of students, beginning a new chapter for WWS and the families it serves.
