Go beyond the stage at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts

Happy springtime, when wonderful things blossom. At Allied Solutions Center, you can see the world’s greatest professional performers, but local folks also have the chance to bloom through community education programs. If your thing is comedy, singing, songwriting or music in general, you can find your voice here.

Comedy class grads face moment of truth

Top graduates of the stand-up comedy program will unveil their original routines April 10 in the event called LIVE! from the Advanced Comedy Class. These are your friends and neighbors who have completed instructor Mat Alano-Martin’s Intro to Stand-Up Comedy – multiple times, in some cases – and moved on to his Stand-Up Comedy Practicum, in which they test their “tight five” routines at local clubs and polish them to a professional sheen.

At $10, it’s a very affordable evening of entertainment (recommended for mature audiences, as stand-up generally is).

The stage is yours on World Voice Day

The Payne & Mencias Palladium is a pretty place where lots of famous people have performed. Wouldn’t it be fun to sing just one song on that fancy stage?

This precise opportunity arises every year during the annual World Voice Day celebration. Although April 16 is the official date of the international observance, event organizers thought 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19 might be more convenient than a weeknight.

All ages are welcome – just pick a song and your choice of accompaniment – but there is time only for the first 30 singers who sign up at 2:30 p.m., so plan to arrive a little early.

Songwriting can be a lonely pursuit …

But it doesn’t have to be! Back by popular demand is the Songwriting: Melody & Lyrics class, where the relaxed learning environment is like a friendly support group in which songwriters at all levels can trade ideas and hone their craft.

Led by local working musicians Kristen Bales and Joshua Thompson in Tuesday night sessions April 21 to May 19, the class culminates in a group performance Friday, May 22, in the Studio Theater.

Resident dancers to perform for the littles

Next up in the monthly Peanut Butter & Jam series for young kids and their chauffeurs is Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, the resident professional dance company at Allied Solutions Center and a true gem of the Central Indiana arts scene.

The April 4 event will start with a brief performance, after which the GHDT dancers will lead the audience through an adventure of movement and music, exploring basic concepts of dance. It’s only $10 for one child and two grown-ups.

Young musicians on the rise

Coming soon to the Payne & Mencias Palladium:

  • April 22 – Hamilton Southeastern High School’s Performing Arts Showcase will feature the HSE Wind Symphony, Serenata Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, performing their ISSMA Organizational and ISSMA State Qualifying Competition repertoire.
  • April 29 – The sixth annual Fishers High School Ensemble Showcase will feature more than 200 exceptional student musicians from the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Sound and Electrum Choirs, performing a dynamic and diverse repertoire.
