The National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF), the philanthropic arm of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), announced that Janine Ferren, RMR, CRR, a freelance court reporter from Fishers, has been selected to serve a three-year term on its Board of Trustees.

NCRA is the country’s leading organization representing stenographic court reporters, captioners, and legal videographers. The announcement was made at a special awards luncheon held at the 2025 NCRA Conference & Expo that took place July 24 to 26 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Ferren holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a concentration in piano from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y., and is also a graduate of the Stenotype Institute in Hicksville, N.Y. She has been a court reporter since 1986 and holds the nationally recognized professional certifications of Registered Merit Reporter (RMR) and Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR). Since 1992 Ferren has worked as a freelance court reporter for Connor Reporting, a Veritext Company located in Indianapolis.

At the national level, Ferren has served on NCRA’s Contests and Finance Committees and the Proofreading Advisory Council. She has also attended several of the Association’s Leadership & Legislative Boot Camps, has been a continuous donor to its Political Action Committee fund, and has been an NCRF Angel Donor since 2021.

At the state level, Ferren served on numerous committees for the Indiana Court Reporters Association (INCRA) before its disbandment in 2022. Her service to INCRA included as treasurer and board member, membership coordinator, assisting with the rewrite of its Constitution & Bylaws, and as a member of the Convention and Career Fair committees.

Outside of her court reporting profession, Ferren has performed in Carnegie Hall Honors Recitals in New York City, has volunteered for and led local Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops, and has volunteered her time with local Al-Anon Family Groups.

Court reporters and captioners rely on the latest in technology to use stenographic machines to capture the spoken word and translate it into written text in real time. These professionals work both in and out of the courtroom recording legal cases and depositions, providing live captioning of events, and assisting members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities with gaining access to information, entertainment, educational opportunities, and more.

If you’re looking for a career that is on the cutting edge of technology, offers the opportunity for work at home or abroad, like to write, enjoy helping others, and are fast with your fingers, then the fields of court reporting and captioning are careers you can explore at NCRA.org/discoversteno.

The NCRA A to Z® Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand program, a free online six-week introductory course, lets participants see if a career in court reporting or captioning would be a good choice for them. The program is an introduction to stenographic theory and provides participants with the opportunity to learn the basics of writing on a steno machine.
